Amsterdam Part 2: Chic places to have a drink—‘Vyne’ and ‘Hilton Sky Lounge’ on a cold, wet and windy Saturday

So where should you go to enjoy a glass of wine on a cold, wet and windy day in Amsterdam? I have two chic places to recommend.

‘Vyne’—Intimate, cosy and stylish. I am loving the floor to ceiling wine storage wall with dimmed lights. Brilliant idea. This wine bar has a collection of bottles from all major wine-growing and producing countries all over the world.

I can’t judge the quality of their wine though as I have only tasted the French Beaujoulais but the ambiance here is definitely kick ass.

I had a Boujealouais red and Pinpin ordered apple juice. She can't drink alcohol.

Then we met with Bru at Hilton Doubletree’s ‘Sky Lounge’—contemporary, sophisticated and with a very impressive view of Amsterdam.

Honestly, I don’t care about the food and drinks here. All I know is that the view here is to die for. I will definitely come back, especially during summer when the roof terrace is open. I can’t stress it enough how glorious the panorama here is. Drop dead gorgeous and truly Amsterdam.

Lovely, lovely, lovely view of Amsterdam!

Pinpin and I go all the way back to our high school days in the 80’s—yes, we are both 42 years old. We were ‘barkada’ (gang) together with girlfriend in Sheffield, Queen Victoria. We girls all have very strong and independent personalities yet at an early age we learned to respect our differences, and most importantly, we give each other utmost privacy. In Philippine culture, privacy does not exist so what we have was something really special.

At any rate, after high school, Pinpin and I managed to see each other from time to time because however taking up different degrees, we went to the same university. After graduation, I relocated to Manila and she stayed in Cebu. Through fate, we crossed our paths again. My brother bumped into her and exchanged contacts. So whenever I fly to Cebu we would meet and hang out. A crazy episode I can remember vividly was the two of us gambling at the Waterfront Airport Hotel & Casino at Mactan, Cebu.

The last time I saw her was 10 years ago when I was about to leave for the Netherlands. She was coincidentally the manager of a freight forwarding company in Cebu and she helped send my special effects to Europe.

In 2010 we found each other again in Facebook. She was temporarily staying with family in California, USA at that time. Our paths was about to cross again because Dutchman and I have just booked a week holiday in California. Needless to say, we were excited to meet! However, an emergency occurred the week we were in California and she had to fly right away back to Hawaii where she lives.

A year and a half later, she finally came to visit me in the Netherlands. Hallelujah!

No mercy weather. It rained the whole day, stayed cold the whole day and the wind can't stop howling the whole day.

Part 3 next....

Visit Period: December 2012
Destinaiton: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
