A Harry Potter bookstore in Porto: Livraria Lello & Irmão

Or as many tourists and visitors call this beautiful piece of art nouveau design and architecture since its opening in 1881—the ‘Lello Bookstore’.

Unfortunately it is not allowed to take pictures inside the bookstore so I gathered here a few pictures from the internet and formed them into a collage.

I first went to check out the bookstore in the morning but unfortunately I was met by a long queue of eager tourists. Of course I decided not to join in the chaos. Later in the afternoon when I came back, there were no queues! On the other hand, I was reminded sternly by the man in suit at the door guarding the bookstore—NO PICTURES and pointing to the no camera sticker sign on the door.

But when I was upstairs I was so tempted to sneak in a shot, however reluctantly withdrawing the idea upon seeing a personnel watching everyone prudently. So I made a conscious decision not to make a fool of myself and behaved for the rest of my stay inside the store.

JK Rowlings lived for a few years teaching English in Porto and many people believed that the inspiration of Harry Potter’s staircase in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry came from this bookstore.

Such a queue in the morning! So I left and came back in the afternoon.

Art Nouveau and the amazing staircase to heaven

No more queue when I came back in the afternoon!
