Kauppatori: Helsinki’s Market Square

Helsinki’s harbour comes alive when the weather eases up a bit. Because that means it is market time!

From spring to autumn the market is bustling with energy. It’s a great place to buy farmer’s produce straight from the farmers themselves, which seems to be the trend here in Finland because I have seen similar at two other markets (yep, this trip became a Finnish foodie trip).

At the Market Square you can also find typically Finnish wares such as reindeer horns and leather and wool skins. But most of all it’s the perfect place to get some grub. There are lots of food stalls and open-air restaurants selling Nordic and international fares. Just be careful of the hungry seagulls vying you for your food.

Let’s have a little walk around the market shall we?

Al fresco dining at the market, now I like that =)

I was really drooling when I took these pictures.

I bought some blueberries for snack. You can never go wrong with these.

That is a very huge fish! Salmon I guess?

Who would have thought these reindeer horns are bottle openers?

The old tram circles here at the Market Square. Market Square in Finnish is Kauppatori, in Swedish is Salutorget. In Finland many signs are both in Finnish and Swedish.

Oh, we are in Finland right? So expect a lot of fur =)

Market Square Address: South Harbour beside Esplanadi Park
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 06:30-18:00, Sat 06.30-16:00, during summer also Sun 10:00-17:00.

Nearby on Etelaranta street is where you can find the Old Market Hall, an indoor market that opened its doors to the public in 1889, however it was closed for renovation when I was there. The Old Market Hall is scheduled to open in the summer of 2014.
