Lovely Turckheim Village on the Alsace Wine Route

Turkcheim Village
Website: Turckheim Tourism

Turckheim is one of the picturesque and charming villages along the Alsace Wine Route. I picked this village to visit upon seeing the lovely pictures online, and oh boy, I wasn’t disappointed! It is a relatively small village though, so you can easily walk around and see everything in half an hour.

The name rings very German, and indeed, this area of France used to be a part of Deutschland. Alsace is a lovely concoction of turbulent Germanic history and stunning architecture with a twist of succulent French flavour and the relaxed way of life. Perfect combination if you were to ask me.

For you to have an idea of the Alsace Wine Route, please visit this previous entry: Overview and Map of Alsace Wine Route. The best time to visit the region is between May and October.

The 'Town Gate France' is the main gate of Turckheim. Back in the days the gate was equipped with a drawbridge and a portcullis.

April brings beautiful flowers in bloom.

This is the 'Town Gate Munster' built in the 14th century.

The Legend of the Night Watch Men

Back in the olden days when candles and fireplaces light and warm up the cold evenings, night watch men in Turckheim do their rounds in the little village reminding everyone not to forget to damp their candles, kill their torches and put out their fireplaces. Aside from enemy attacks, plunder, epidemic, fire is one of the ultimate nemesis of a village, and the villagers are doing their best to prevent one.

As centuries pass by, and with the progress of modern technology (electricity), the role of the night watch men became extinct.

Above picture, you can see a caricature of the Night Watch Man doing the rounds with the children following him around.

But nothing to worry! Since 1953 Turckheim has revived this legend but only during the peak season.

Every night at 22:00 from the 1st of May until the end of October, night watch men do their rounds, singing old songs, as they take the streets of Turckheim reminding everyone not to forget to put out their lights. It is said that the villagers and tourists join in the rounds making this nightly event truly a historical and legendary spectacle from May to October in the village.

The village has 3 night watch men who continues the tradition.

Well, hello there! I know, not a very happy smiley photo. It can be difficult taking selfies you know.
