Slovak National Food: Bryndzové Halušky (Potato Dumplings w/ Sheep’s Cheese & Bacon) at Med Malina in Kosice
While in Kosice, Slovakia I had a very late lunch at Restaurant Med Malina, a country-style restaurant offering Central/Eastern European traditional ‘Slow Food’ in the city centre. The perfect restaurant as I am looking at really trying out the local cuisine.
It didn’t take me long to choose from the menu because before the trip I already did some research.
They say ‘bryndzove halusky’ (or halusky) is the national dish of Slovakia. A most loved dish by many locals, this hearty bowl of traditional goodness is creamy, chewy and delightful.
The dish is made of tiny boiled potato and flour dumplings which are quite similar to the Italian gnocchi. It is cooked with sheep’s milk cheese – bryndza, which you can only find in Slovakia and Central/Eastern Europe and topped with fried bacon bits when served.
It is not really the most healthiest of food. A daily heap of this would do damage to anybody’s waist. However, this surprised me a lot as this was really, really good. As you can see in the picture it is presented nicely but is far from looking very gourmand, you’d wonder if it is appetising at all. But when you taste it? Ah, your taste glands will be pleased and you would want more.
I would order this again, but perhaps just half a portion please. Carbos you know are not a woman's best girlfriend.

The restaurant was full and I had to wait for a few minutes to be seated.
The restaurant has a homey and country ambiance and I did wonder if they sell or use all the preserved gourmet food stuff on the shelves.
My very late lunch: Slovak's national food - Bryndsove Halusky, a side salad and a glass of red wine.
I was seated at the window. The restaurant is located in the centre of Kosice, on Hlavna street.
And a very affordable meal as you can see.
