Bath, England: Pulteney Bridge and the Riverside Cafe

The late 18th century Pulteney Bridge spanning the River Avon is one of the dramatic sights in Georgian Bath.

The bridge is designed in Palladian style - Georgian architecture and is a bit similar in terms of concept to the bridges in Italy, the Ponte Vecchio in Florence and the Ponte di Rialto in Venice, both of which I have visited and set my foot on many years ago. So what makes them special? All these bridges have shops in them.

Here at Pulteney Bridge, it houses several shops and cafes and restaurants.

I initially wanted to sit down for some coffee by the window of the Bridge Coffee Shop which is located on the south-end of the sidewalk of the bridge and has a full view of the River Avon and the weir below, however it was quite full. Then I remembered that I read somewhere about another cafe located below the bridge, right on the river. Walking further on the bridge, I came across a sign: Riverside Cafe Restaurant. Voila, I found it.

The place was a bit quiet and if the weather had cooperated, I probably would have taken my coffee outside the terrace and have a full view access to the River Avon, right on my feet. This is a great place to chill out on a warm and sunny day.

Hope you like my pictures.

The shops on the north end sidewalk of Pulteney Bridge.

This is the south end part of the sidewalk of the bridge. There was a time by the way that the bridge was set to a pedestrian zone only.

The Bridge Coffee Shop is a cafe, bakery and a coffee shop. I wanted to sit here as it has fantastic views down to the river, but they were full.

Spotted the Riverside Cafe which is located under the bridge right on the river.

Riverside Cafe has a little outdoor terrace. If it was lovely weather, it would have been the perfect place to chill out and enjoy the river.

It was Bath Fashion Week when I was there. I did not really check it out though. I like being fashionable but I do not have to patience to delve into fashion subjects.

You can see one of the entrance to the Bath Guildhall Market on the Grand Parade Street.

There are parks here with a pathway along the River Avon on both sides near the bridge offering a great place to relax and just enjoy the peaceful and beautiful surroundings.

Pulteney Bridge is a bridge made of limestone. Beside it you can see a row of Doric columns, this is just below the Grande Parade Street.
