Novi Sad, Serbia: Liberty Square (Trg Slobode)

The Liberty Square is the main square in Novi Sad and this is the heart of the city. This was the first thing I saw after walking from the fortress where my hotel is located and I was like -- Wow, this is a beautiful square in a city that I just recently knew about.

For first time visitors in Novi Sad this is the first place to go and appreciate its main attraction. Home to the Roman Catholic Name of Mary Church (aka the Cathedral) in neo gothic style built in circa 1894, the stately Magistrate building (the City Hall), the Vojvodanska Bank, the Tanurdžić’s Palace and the oldest hotel in the Vojvodina region, the Vojvodina Hotel.

In the middle of the square you will find the bronze statue of Svetozar Miletic, an old mayor of the city and the political leader of the Serbs in Vojvodina.

The square is a favourite place for locals to meet and hang out, and to celebrate important events in the city as well. It is a lovely square to spend some time and enjoy the stunning elegant buildings and the very nice atmosphere.

I managed to go inside the cathedral when it was having a mass service and there were quite a number of people in it. Compared to the west, religion is very much alive in Serbia. You can read a post about this topic here: Belgrade: Church of Saint Sava - Religion is Alive in Serbia

In the side streets of Liberty Square you can find shops and cafes with outdoor terraces.

Beside the cathedral is a pedestrian street leading to Zmaj Jovina where you can find a lot of outdoor cafe terraces. Read here a blog entry I made earlier: The Cafe Terrace Street - Zmaj Jovina

This is what I love about travelling to not yet known places, you get to see unexpected charm and beauty.

The beige building on the left is the Vojvodanska Bank.

The oldest hotel in the region, Vojvodina Hotel. This was previously a luxurious hotel. Nowadays it is a 3-star hotel located in a 5-star location =)
