Lefkada, Greece: Charming Agios Nikitas Village

We spent a day here at Agios Nikitas, a charming traditional Greek village that has its own beautiful beach. It is one of the popular and must-visit villages when visiting the island of Lefkada.

The village is small and closed to vehicular traffic. From the main road, visitors are led into the village through a pedestrianised cobbled stone streets adorned with shops, cafes and tavernas on the sidelines. It’s a lovely and cosy oasis one can expect of a tiny unchanged Greek village transformed into a beach holiday spot.

Dutchman and I always say that the thing the Greeks really did good is the islands. They managed to keep it traditional and unchanged. Well done!

Visiting cars are therefore kept outside the village and this means parking can be a nightmare during high season. We were here just the end of the low season (end June) and it was already busy, also because it was a weekend, but we managed to find parking further down the main street.

Because Lefkada is connected to mainland Greece by a bridge, many Greek locals from the mainland drive in the weekend to the island and come here at Agios Nikitas.

We had lunch at Sapfo Taverna which is located right on the beach. It is one of the best spots in Agios Nikitas to sit down for a drink, lunch or dinner, the view of the beach and the Ionian Sea is just wonderful from its open taverna. Check out my blog entry here: Agios Nikitas Lunch at Sapfo Taverna.

We spent the rest of the day chilling out on the beach. The only thing I did not like at all, apart from a chock-full beach, is that there are no sunbeds and parasols here for rent. I guess even if there were, I do not think I would stand a chance to rent one, just by looking at the throngs of beach holidaymakers on that day. It is best to bring your own parasol here and use your own beach towel to lay down. Here is my blog entry about the beach: Gorgeous and Crowded Agios Nikitas Beach

My original plan was to stay until dinner here in Agios Nikitas but since we had a rather very late lunch, we changed plans. By 20:00 we were still not hungry, so we ditched dinner in lieu of frappes. We sat in an outdoor café on the beach sipping our Greek frappes whilst enjoying the sun setting down the horizon in an explosion of warm orange and yellow colours.

Ah, just another lovely day in the Greek Islands.

Here are some of the pictures I took of Agios Nikitas village.

The cars parked here are vehicles owned by village residents. All visitors must leave their car outside the village. Parking can be on the main street.

I am loving the outdoor ambience of the traditional Greek (fish) tavernas here at Agios Nikitas. Always a lovely sight to behold, don't you agree?

The side streets here at Agios Nikitas are tiny, narrow and inclined.

Enjoying our Greek frappes here on the beach whilst watching the sun go down. This drink is a must drink/try when in Greece, especially in the islands. Order it when on the terrace on a hot sunny day, chilled and with lots of ice in it.
