Netherlands: Lunching with a View to the Highway at Van der Valk Hotel Restaurant Vianen

Last March the Dutch mother treated us to lunch at the Van der Valk Hotel Restaurant in Vianen (Utrecht).

Lunch at Van der Valk Hotel Restaurant Vianen

When I told the Dutchman that we are going to a Van der Valk Hotel Restaurant, he responded with a very sourly-looking face, ‘Bah’. His knowledge and recollection of the establishment are not very positive at all—along with the highways hotel restaurants with boring and shabby-looking interiors inside 1960’s buildings. I couldn’t really counteract him as I haven’t been to a Van der Valk hotel restaurant recently but the Dutch mother heard very good reviews about the one in Vianen recently.

On the day of our lunch meet up, I was surprised to be welcomed in the entrance of the hotel by a lovely, airy and modern reception and lobby. There are no traces of shabbiness and there definitely is no air of the 1960’s.

We proceeded to go to the first floor to the restaurant, which was quite huge and somewhat busy. The interior design is very modern and reminds me a bit of Marcel Wanders’ hotel designs. We quickly saw the outdoor terrace through the glass windows and because it was an exceptionally warm and beautiful weather day for March, which rarely happens in the Netherlands, we decided to exploit the opportunity and took our seats outside.

Those living in northern Europe are the only ones who understand this hunger for the sun =)

The outdoor terrace is looking over the A2 highway which is partly covered by sound barriers. I thought that it was very interesting to have the big highway as a view while lunching.

We all ordered different kinds of food for our lunch. We had Black Angus burger and fries, a Delfts Blauw green salad with beetroot and figs, a veggie burger with a side garden salad and an Asian fusion of soup, thinly sliced beef strips and fresh sashimi. Everyone reported back that their meal was delicious.

Mine was the Asian fusion which is called ‘Combination’ in the menu. I loved the sashimi and wakame seaweed, the beef strips were good, but I found the Thai curry soup to be too greasy for my liking. The variety though I thought is spot on.

We enjoyed this lunch very much. The food was good, the quite original setting was entertaining and of course, it’s an all-ladies out with the family affair. There’s not much to complain I guess!
