Belgium: Cathedral-like Antwerp Central Station

So I was in Antwerp, Belgium last April together with girlfriend Bubbles.

The cathedral-like train station in Antwerp, Belgium opened its doors to the public in 1905

We went on a day trip with the car and managed to park adjacent to Antwerp Central (Antwerpen Centraal) station. Which was spot on because I wanted to show Bubbles the cathedral-like railway station which is an attraction in its own right. She was very much looking forward to seeing it as well.

I have also stopped counting the number of times I have been to Antwerp. It is actually my go-to place when I am craving for steamed mussels. Lucky me it is not too far away =)

The train station has 4 levels and 14 train tracks.

At the Antwerp Central we managed to take a LOT of selfies. We got stuck here for some time because Bubbles was so taken by the stunning architecture and the grand entrance hallway. She wanted to take pictures of every nook and cranny, so I took the opportunity to snap a few shots as well. Then I only realised later that all the selfies we took were taken from Bubble's camera and mobile phone, lol. So sadly, I have no selfies to add on this post. Ooops.

I have to say though that Antwerp Central is one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world.

Interestingly, I have only visited Antwerp with the train once. It was with the Dutchman many moons ago. We have packed our bags and spent a long weekend in the city. Nowadays though, I cannot imagine spending a night over here, let alone a long weekend in Antwerp. I see Belgian cities (those near the Dutch border) these days as "day trip" cities. #belgiumtravelledout

With Bubbles visiting, it was a great excuse to visit the city. She has been to Brussels, Ghent and Bruges but not to Antwerp! Well, no sweat for moi the host. It is the nearest Belgian city from Utrecht by car =)

So here are the photos:

Looking like an altar inside the church.

The ceiling and cupola of the entrance hall/lobby.

The red wave/arch roof of the train hall.

The busy stationstraat (station street) where the railway station is located is filled with outdoor cafe terraces. It's a good place to sit down to catch a drink and people watch.

Antwerp was on alert when we were there. Military men everywhere in the city and around the central station.

More of Antwerp on my next posts!
