Outdoor Dining Scene and Local Market in Nydri, Lefkada

Outdoor markets and food centers are not a big thing in the Greek Islands. I do not really know why.

I am not complaining though because the islands have more to offer than just markets, such as the picture above of alfresco dining right by the water. Oh, my cup of tea really =)

It is a bit similar to going skiing in Austrian Alps where you get the best apres ski bars a winter sport holiday can offer, but Austria does not have the gourmet-style outdoor food markets that France has though. I guess Greece is something like this as well.

Delicious local pastry, loukoumades (tiny balls of doughnuts usually coated in honey or icing sugar).

In Lefkada, I was surprised when I woke up to vendors preparing their stalls for the outdoor market on Marine Bay. I could see the busy preparations from the balcony of our apartment hotel. The market will stay for a week I was told so I scheduled an evening with the Dutch mother to visit the market when we are not going somewhere else.

Obviously, the Dutchman would want to miss this for the world, haha. It is a woman activity, a woman thing =)

You see, I plan our holiday agenda. We are always onto something every day, either we do nothing or we are on the move. One evening we will be spending the whole afternoon and evening in the western part of the island, another day would be in a totally different island nearby, and on other days, we would be staying put in town, in the vicinity of our apartment hotel.

Not every day is the same when we are holidaying, but one thing for sure. We do things slowly.

The market was in full swing when we visited.

A typical sight in Greece, old ladies wearing all black. They are widows. They wear black every single day in their lives.

The market was really organised for the locals, not just for the tourists.

We saw rolls of textile being sold, cages of behaved parrots, Greek deep-fried sugary treats such as loukoumades, a variety of clothing, home and personal accessories, kitchen wares, knives and even curtains.

I guess what I loved about the market is that it is along the street where many cafe-restaurant outdoor terraces are located. The market has become one with the outdoor cafe and restaurant scene. I think that is what makes the market really nice.

Anyway, we did not buy anything, although I was tempted to get a portion of loukoumades which is not good at all for the waistline =)

The outdoor cafe and restaurant scene:

The outdoor dining scene is a very Greek island affair.

This is one of the reasons why I keep coming back to the Greek Islands.

Small cafe restaurants with lounges. Perfect for the summer.
