Food Hall in Deventer, Netherlands: The "Food Dock"

The east of the Netherlands has its first food market hall! And yup, I managed to visit it last year in the summertime with Bru.

The food hall is called Food Dock and is located on a haven just a little bit outside the city center of Deventer.

To be honest, I cannot anymore remember where I read about this place but I quickly grabbed the opportunity to go and visit together with Bru on a summer weekend last year. It was timely because Bru lives in the east of the country. Deventer is not too far away from her.

I am always in for a good eat so if there is a new and special craze in town, especially a food hall or market, I am happy to try.

So Bru and I came here for lunch in August. It wasn't very busy at all and we were able to find free parking easily. The food hall is located in the Zwarte Silo, a grain storage in the Haven Quarter of an industrial area in the city. This part of Deventer is up and coming and is dubbed as the Little Berlin. Having been to Berlin, I can understand why. There is grunge art fused with industrial design in a modern twist and a bit of a rough edge going on in this place.

Just outside the food hall building is a dock, hence the name of this food market hall "Food Dock" I guess. This jetty has an open boat docked to it that is cushioned by the other boats in the haven. It functions as a (summer) terrace and is attached to the building. People can just walk out from the food hall and step right into the boat terrace. Pretty neat I should say.

The food hall's concept is eating your way around the world. Each of the food stalls offers food from a particular country. Each stall has its own special cuisine. A key thing at the kitchens here is having food available for the vegans and those with (gluten) allergies.

So for my lunch, I had a Gado-Gado from Sannepan. Gado-Gado is a very famous Indonesian salad food of steamed vegetables, hard-boiled egg, and peanut sauce dressing. I first had it sometime in 2002-2003 at a party of an Indonesian acquaintance here in the Netherlands. I really liked it because of the vegetables. The Gado-Gado I ordered was paired with grilled chicken satay.

My drink was a special gin tonic drink with rosemary and cloves which I picked at the bar. This was really good! I wished I had taken another glass but I was driving that day.

Bru, on the other hand, had some sushi wraps at Meneer Temaki. She had the salmon and avocado which she managed to devour in seconds. She was still a bit hungry so she added a vegan wrap from this Caribbean stall which must have left now since I do not see the food stall on the website anymore. I quite liked the fried plantains though.

You can't pay cash here. The food stalls only accept cards (mostly debit cards).

The food hall is open daily from 12:00 to 21:00 (23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays). They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

We sat outside on the boat terrace. The gin tonic with cloves and rosemary was really good. Very refreshing for a warm summer day.

Bru ordered another serving of vegan fruit pita wraps with fried plantains and a side salad. This was a Caribbean dish.
