Sinterklaas 2011

Yup, it is the time of the year again for Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet! Time to open gifts!

Yesterday I was visiting a customer in the Ranstad area, Amstelveen to be exact. They were having a Sinterklaas party for the kids. Moms and dads sneaked out from work early in the afternoon to pick up their kids from school and home, and brought them back to work with them to join the party. When one of the guys on the sales floor asked if I wanted to see the party, I could not resist.

Tomorrow Saturday will be our version with the Dutch family.

Officially Sinterklaas is celebrated on the eve of his birthday 5 December which is this Monday. Most families this year will be celebrating it earlier this weekend.

For many expatriates, Black Piet has always been considered controversial (read: they think it is racism). I do not have a problem with Black Piet though. Doesn't bother me at all.

Visit Period: November 2011
Destination: Amstelveen, The Netherlands
