A Samcheong-dong trend: Rooftop and elevated balcony cafés

For starters, a ‘dong’ in Korean means neighbourhood and a ‘gu’ means district. Samcheong-dong is a neighbourhood located in Jongno-gu which is Seoul downtown city centre. If you are visiting Seoul for the first time, I strongly recommend to stay in Jongno District. This is the happening place and where the main attractions are situated.

Rooftop cafes are a lovely and common sight in Samcheong-dong.

Samcheong-dong was a lovely surprise to us. It was when Dutchman and I were almost done strolling around Bukchon Hanok Village when we discovered this charming artsy neighbourhood. It’s located just beside and below Bukchon.

This trendy yet traditional spot in Seoul is bursting with funky cafes and restaurants, art galleries and hip shops. I will blog more about the charms of Samcheong-dong separately. However, what really stands out in Samcheong-dong are the unique and fabulous cafes, and this is what I will blog about today.

Here, café business owners seem to have a good feeling of the social trends. They take the café experience to a new level by combining it with an outdoorsy touch. And so are rooftop cafes and elevated balcony cafes born in Samcheong-dong.

I just totally love the concept of combining outdoors and café on a rooftop or an open balcony with a view. We all know that having a view always sells.

Cafe Breezin is the name of the rooftop cafe.

The view down to the main street.

Cappuccino, double espresso and crepes cake (which was spelled crape cake). This was so delish and light. Ultra thin crepes layered on top of each other with light icing in between to form a cake.

There is a little garden on the rooftop.

So, when you find yourself in Samcheong-dong, do not miss the rooftop cafes! Great place for brunch, lunch, an afternoon snack, pre-dinner snack when the weather is good.

Here are some of the other rooftop cafes and elevated balcony cafes with a view in the area. Koreans tend to advertise them as 'for couples'.

And here is moi, fully satisfied with our afternoon jaunt in Samcheong-dong: coffee + crepes cake + rooftop view.
