Panoramic Rooftop Views of Zagreb from Upper Town

For starters, Zagreb City has a small core centre that is divided into two areas: Upper Town (Gornji Grad) and Lower Town (Donji Grad). The Upper Town is the old centre, partly hilly and is mostly pedestrianized.

There is a funicular on Ilica, the main shopping street dividing Gornji Grad and Donji Grad but you can also walk up to Upper Town. In fact there are many ways going up to the top. The best viewing platform is right on top of the funicular where the LotrÅ¡Äak Tower is located and the street that leads to Strossmayer Promenade (Strossmayerovo Å¡etaliÅ¡te) at the back of St. Catherine’s Church.

Of course the views are probably much better at the top of the LotrÅ¡Äak Tower but I was not feeling adventurous and industrious enough to climb the steps. Sometimes you have those sluggish travel days. Maybe because it was drizzling. Where is the sun the weather forecast has promised? Hmp. I felt cheated.

Here are the rest of the rooftop views of Zagreb.

Hello Zagreb rooftops!

It was not really raining, just drizzling a bit, still it dampened my mood to explore the city and even climb the tower (which is the grey thing on the right).

The funicular on a little side street accessible from Ilica Street.

You have the option to walk up and down on these stairs as well.

Right below is Zagreb’s busy shopping street, Ilica which is also where my hotel is located. In fact I can access my hotel through the stairs that goes directly to the hotel front door.

Two churches, the Cathedral of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (the big one with two towers) and the beautiful  St. Mary’s Church Tower.

The city is going through a transformation, having joined the EU just last year which will pave better pastures for the country. In 5-10 years I am sure these ramshackle rooftops will be replaced with shiny well-maintained shingles.
