A Lovely Bed & Breakfast near Ottawa: Domaine D’Amour

I found this bed and breakfast property at Booking.com and I was so glad that I booked it.

It is the beautiful and elegant Bed & Breakfast Domaine D’Amour in Russell/Vars area. I stayed here for 3 nights, using it as my home base whilst visiting my niece in Ottawa. The bed and breakfast villa is just 25 minutes to the city centre. Not bad at all. I did thought about staying in the city but when I saw this property listing, I just can’t help but fall for it.

My stay here was quite lovely. The villa was gorgeous, and my room, the Suite Champlain was equally exquisite. I really loved it. The bed was very comfortable, I could sleep in everyday. There is as well a painting above the headboard of the bed of a medieval Dutch tall ship fighting with other tall ships at sea. My niece AnK, who stayed with me for a night, wondered where the battle happened and who the other flag bearing ships were. Maybe the Dutch tried extending their trading route from New York (once New Amsterdam) all the way to Quebec? Who knows.

My hosts, Denis and Luce were a very nice and welcoming couple. They are French Canadians so French is their native language. Both of them even went back to France to trace their roots and both managed to get each a certificate of proof from the mayors of their ancestor’s villages. These certificates hang now on the walls of the staircase. They also told me that the villa is really their house where they raised up their children. Denis and Luce are looking forward to finally retiring. This means that they are selling the beautiful property. Anyone who is interested, please get in touch with them!

Now Luce is such a sweet woman. She would go out of her way to make you feel at home and cared. I love having my breakfast in the beautiful French styled dining room. So regal and elegant. It was a surprise when Luce told me that Denis did all the interior design of the house.

Luce and Denis also prepared my breakfasts with extra care and attention. I really appreciated that—merci beaucoup! You basically order ala carte without a menu. Just tell them what you want and they will prepare it for you.

I was there in September so the pool was closed.

Funnily, it is really true that in Canada it is safe. They leave their cars unlocked on the streets, and they do not lock their homes! I could not believe it but YES, it is true!

Tip: When looking for this place, tick in the correct English address into the GPS (St. Pierre Road, Vars). Vars is part of Ontario in the English part of Canada. I used the French address (Rue St. Pierre) and it brought me to the next village which is part of Quebec. The bed and breakfast is located near the border of Ontario and Quebec. So don’t mix it up. Use the English address!

The elegant French dining room with French Louis style chairs.

The hallway and the living room.

My bedroom, the Champlain Room named after Sanuel de Champlain, the Father of the New France. He founded New France and Quebec City.

The mysterious painting with the Dutch tall ship in battle with the other 3 tall ships. I did a quick research and the Shetlands in Scotland has a similar flag, blue with a white cross.

You can spot the pool (covered in plastic) at the back of the house from my bedroom window.

My own drawing area where I watch TV and do computer work.

My first day breakfast together with my niece AnK.

Fruits with a bit of yoghurt.

French toast with scrambled eggs and bacon.

Luce showed me the most expensive room. This used to be their own master bedroom. Her husband Denis did all the interior design.

The room has become the filming location of a bed and breakfast love story.

My second day breakfast: Pancakes with bacon and maple syrup.

A very nice touch of mint and champagne coloured rose.

My third day breakfast of toast, butter and jam, and ham and scrambled eggs.

The garden at the back of the villa.
