Karpathos: Chilling Out at Agios Nikolaos Beach

Chilling at this cool beach bar on Agios Nikolaos.

This beach is a runner-up favourite for Dutchman and moi mainly because of the resident beach bar here that has a nice chillout factor, and oh, the music! Especially the music, it is exceptional, it has its own DJ turntable set and really plays very good beach chillout, and sometimes, upbeat party music.

We wanted to come back here but we ran out of days since we were also checking out other beaches. We also wanted to spend time in between the days we were out at the pool of our aparthotel. The golden rule is that the holidays must remain relaxed, not rushed and should not become a list of activities and sightseeing.

On our way to the beach.

So we came here on an afternoon after a scooter ride in the southern part of the island. Agios Nikolaos Beach lies near Arkasa, a town on the southwest of Karpathos. We discovered this beach spontaneously and decided to stay put for the rest of the day, actually until sundown.

The route from Pigadia, the capital (also called Karpathos):

We were quickly smitten by the cool beach bar (KarPassion Beach Bar) and had a little lunch/snack of Dakos Salad. It's a local salad in the area where you have bread covered with olive oil, tomato paste and all salad stuff such as fresh tomatoes and onions, capers, olives, crumbled feta cheese, sun-dried tomatoes with dressing on top of a very thick balsamic vinegar. Except for the soppy bread, it was delicious. I don't like soggy bread and never dunk my bread on anything.

In the background cool music was playing while people on the other side of the bar were watching the World Cup (football) in silence with intermittent remarks such as "Ooh" and "Yeah". I cannot remember which teams were playing. Dutchman and I were concentrated on our salad, the comfy two-seater and the relaxing view of the beach.

The beach is a small and cosy beach bay with golden sand. The waters seem to be a bit shallow but the waves are strong. I actually had fun playing with the waves. There is a volleyball court on the beach and people were playing non-stop. Sunbeds and parasols are of course available with toilet and shower facilities.

After our little lunch, we settled ourselves on the beach taking a set of parasol and sunbeds in front of the KarPassion Beach Bar. Nobody asked us to pay for it, perhaps it was free since we had lunch at the beach bar. The rest of the afternoon was spent chilling out. Because the beach is not big and not crowded, it is very appealing which makes it special.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed a lot our time here on Agios Nikolaos Beach. We were one of the last ones to leave the beach!

Tip: The KarPassion Beach Bar holds beach parties so check them out.

KarPassion Beach Bar on Agios Nikolaos Beach. Great music here and they hold beach parties.

These guys are watching the World Cup.

Relaxed and chilled-out.

Dakos Salad. Its a Cretan type salad and there is also a Karpathian version which is very similar. There is a bread doused in olive oil and tomato paste under this yummy goodness.

Lunch with a view of the beach.

This beach can have strong waves and can be windy.

A wavy beach with golden sand.

I read two books on this holiday and this is the first one from David Baldacci. I like reading crime - suspense - conspiracy type of books.

Chilling out after a dip in the sea.

One of the last ones to leave the beach =)
