What to do on a drizzly night in San Francisco? The Gold Dust Lounge
On our second day in San Francisco it rained. SIGH, we’ve barely seen the city and we’re trapped inside the car, we’ve even travelled as far as Oakland, driving in circles (literally), just because we refuse to touch ground and get rained upon. Luckily that night the rain stopped and although it drizzled just a wee bit every now and then, it was doable. Tired from driving around the whole day, we decided to walk, all the way down to Union Square to check out if there is something worth seeing in the area.
And voila, just near the corner to Union Square, we found this bar: The Gold Dust Lounge
With its cinema-style and burning bulb signage, the lounge bar reminds me of Las Vegas, however, going inside was a nice surprise as it brings you back in time. Like during the stuck-up Victorian days when the red colour, mahogany wood and gold accents are the prime combination of what is proper, noble and upmarket for interior design. There linger a certain staleness in the air as well, not really the scent though... perhaps, the ambiance of the old world? Ah whatever, it certainly isn’t negative at all, it even adds charm to the old world atmosphere of the bar.
The lounge bar has its own resident live act, a country-style trio on drums and two on guitars. For $3, or if you are feeling very generous, $5, you can request a song. Don’t be fooled by their looks, they did the song, ‘Painted Black’ really well!
I am also not sure if this bar is a favourite hangout for certain people—cannot put a finger on this but definitely not mine, althought it’s good to visit at least once, but anyway, we saw several youngsters drop by and make a dance scene. A raucous sight I must say, and wow, very provocative as well. Rated PG haha! On the other hand, I was grumpy with my back and shoulders being brushed the whole time because they were doing the tango dance to the tune of some god-knows-what-country-rock-music. See, whenever I see girls going wild, I always say to myself, ‘Thank god I can’t go back to teenage life!’ (duh, I am so getting old)
The bar was quite full and all sorts of people from every day life walk in here.

This band obviously have yet to discover technology (look at the stash of song lyrics on paper).
Later in the evening I went to the toilet to relieve myself from the Stella Artois we had and when I turned around to flush the toilet, look at what I saw on the wall:
Yep, a big, big LOL. I was speechless. Better take a foto, quick!
Alright, it’s high time to call it a night. Going back to the hotel is a half hour walk and it drizzled again a little bit but I didn’t care anymore as we were heading back.
Here are some of the fotos I took along the way.

Union Square and the famous San Francisco Cable Car.

We passed by this very chic apartment(s) with an opulent lobby, and then another less chic apartment(s) with no lobby but a set of doors...
