Dublin, Ireland Travel Period: September 2019 After the business meeting in the morning, which went pretty well, by the way, I made my way to the Powerscourt Centre.

September Evening in Dublin

Dublin, Ireland Travel Period: September 2019 It was nice to visit Dublin again. A rather quick visit, though, as I was here for a business meeting. Because it's work travel, I did not have any specifics in the plan but wanted to make use of the free time to see the city a bit again.

Dublin under the pouring rain and more city scenes

One morning while walking on O’Connell Street I got caught under the pouring rain. Like the Netherlands including Belgium, as well as it’s big sister, the United Kingdom (especially Scotland), rain is part of the daily life in Ireland. I have no raincoat or umbrella so I took refuge on the doorsteps of Gresham Hotel. There was something familiar about the hotel, like it was one of those hotels I have stayed before during quick business trips. I guess deja vu’s happen sometimes. Anyway, there was not much to do but wait for the rain to stop and while doing so, I naturally took fotos. It was rush hour after all, everyone was trying to get to their destination fast, even under the pouring rain. And here are a few more important sights of Dublin: St. Audoen's Church circa 1190 (see tower on left foto) on Coornmarket, Dublin. The Christ Church Cathedral circa 1030 on High Street intersection, very impressive piece of architecture. And more random Dublin c...

Visiting Dublin Castle, Royal Chapel and St. Stephen’s Green

Image
In my earlier post, I mentioned about Grafton Street being the main shopping thoroughfare of Dublin and for those not into shopping, the area is also a great place to walk through considering that at the end of the street you will reach the west side entrance, the Fusiliers Arch aka Traitors Arch to St. Stephen’s Green (Irish: Faiche Stiabhna), a fine and very relaxing green oasis in the heart of the busy city. Across the west entrance is St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Center which looks like a conservatory and tea house (humongous that is) in a castle estate but yeah it is in the city center and was once Dublin’s biggest shopping center. As well as on the west side you will find the starting point of the Green Line of Dublin Luas Tram. Dublin has new high technology trams. The park was opened in 1664 and is about 6 hectares. I enjoyed walking around and took a few fotos, of course. St. Stephen’s Green Park Fusilier Arch AKA Traitors Arch, and the names of the Royal Dub...

Dublin, Ireland: St. Patrick´s Cathedral and Park

Image
When I think of Ireland, I think—3 leaf clover— Guinness and bars and getting drunk —green (my favourite colour by the way)—IRA—Irish poets—The Corrs, Cranberries, Enya and U2 —Devout Catholics—St. Patricks of the St. Patrick’s Day phenomenon and of course, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. St. Patrick’s Cathedral St. Patrick’s Cathedral, also known as ‘The National Cathedral and Collegiate Church of Saint Patrick’ (Irish: Árd Eaglais Naomh Pádraig) was built in 1191 and is the biggest church in Ireland. It has a beautiful park with a Literary Parade Wall dedicated to Irish Literature and Ireland’s famous writers and Nobel Prize Winners that I previously met on textbooks during my High School English class—James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw. I must admit I was a lazy, mediocre and selfish student so I never learned to appreciate them before. It was a lovely day, the sun shining, people are out, the flowers still in bloom, so after inspecting ...
