Venetian Lagoon Island: Lunch in Burano

Image
We had lunch in Burano Island in a restaurant called, Bar Sport. A very interesting name for a restaurant I reckon. We sat outside of course. Blondine had Pasta al Frutti di Mari while my lunch was typically Italian vegetarian--grilled vegies: peppers, aubergine and courgette, and green rucola and tomato salad on the side as well which we shared a bit. I love vegies, I can eat them every day. The restaurant was quite busy, it was prime time lunch that they forgot to serve my grilled vegies on time. So I had to ask them about it and I had to WAIT longer. Good thing that I ordered a green salad so I started my lunch with it. The prices were fairly decent though compared to Venice (obviously because this is in the islands, it is outside Venice) but Blondine was less pleased with her pasta. However, she only has great praises for the desserts. She ate mine as well as I cannot stand the sweetness! So the verdict. 3.5 stars out of 5. Except for the desserts, I think Blondine will rat...

Venetian Lagoon Island: Burano, lace and bright colored houses

The best island to visit in the Venetian Lagoon is hands down, Burano, but then again I am not into glassware bits and pieces which Murano raves about—I’m more into culture and just the loveliness or uniqueness of the place, thus Burano has won my heart. She has left an impression on me worth sharing. Burano lies north of Venice and it takes approximately half an hour’s vaporetto ride from Murano (45 minutes if from Venice Fondamente Nove vaporetto stop in Cannaregio). So while waiting for the ferry to Burano in Faro vaporetto stop in Murano (take the LN line), the crowds all of a sudden mushroomed, we had to squeeze ourselves in between the line that resembles a mob. Is half of Murano going to Burano Island? And because of the overwhelming number of people on board, I started to worry a bit if the vaporetto might go down. While hanging on to that thought, I quickly searched where the lifesaver vests on board are stashed, haha. This just 0.21 km² island is a once thriving fishing v...

Venetian Lagoon Island (Italy): Murano, renowned for glass-making

Laguna Veneta (Venetian lagoon) has a number of islands, Venice being the biggest which I’ve learned is actually a set of islets connected to each other by bridges but is seen as 1 island. The lagoon reminds me of the Nichupte Lagoon in Cancun, Mexico . But unlike Cancun that is facing the vast and sometimes tumultuous Caribbean Sea, the Venetian lagoon is actually enclosed by the Adriatic Sea, much safer I guess, although Venice has problems during spring when the waters rise. Venice should hire the Dutch who are experts in land reclamation and water management. Or maybe they have already? Like Venice, Murano Island is also a cluster of islands with bridges linking the islands together. The island still lives on its old trade -- glass blowing but mainly survives now from tourism. There is a boat service to the island of Murano in San Zaccaria vaporetto stop in the Castello quarter of Venice which is just a stone’s throw away from piazza San Marco. The line 41 and 42 stops at e...
