Sardinhas lunch in Lisbon at Ninho Dourado

I am soooooo backlogged with my travel entries. I probably have more than 70 entries on queue (travels from late last year up to now and I am traveling again next week!). I haven’t written any of them yet, not even on draft, and for the fotos, some are already arranged but the rest are not. The issue really is time. You might have noticed in the last weeks that I have been quite consistent in posting daily, that is because I am on a break but begin November I will be back on the daily corporate grind BUT I am still hoping to post daily. I hope so because I LOVE SHARING my travel fotos and experiences with everyone.

Anyway, since I am on a roll here on food-related stories, my travel to Lisbon, Portugal last November brought back memories, fond memories of the city 5 years ago. I had a quick Lisbon call before proceeding to my final destination, Sintra and I remembered having enjoyed a scrumptious feast of grilled sardines on Rua Augusta, the main artery of Lisbon. Ah, my taste buds are looking forward to sampling them again! Ever had a craving you have to fly a few hundred miles to get it?

I was actually famished so upon arriving in Lisbon, I quickly rushed to the Centrum and trusting my instincts, I searched for the restaurant. Voila, spotted it—Ninho Dourado on the busy shopping street Rua Augusta. Luckily, I have a good sense of direction and a way of remembering places I have been to in the past, provided I am somewhere in the vicinity. So this happy returning customer sat down on the outdoor terrace and ordered the same lunch 5 years ago: Grilled Sardines with boiled potatoes, pickled peppers and green salad.

Very typical in Portugal, they serve the grilled sardines with boiled potatoes.

So what’s the ruling after the lunch? Umm... is there an adage saying that the first time will always be the best? I was despondent; there was no culinary climax? Sigh. The grilled sardines didn’t taste like the grilled sardines I had 5 years ago. I don’t think I even finished the whole meal. And the wine was horrible as well. This is turning out to be a disenchanting food experience in Lisbon, good thing there is Sintra waiting for me.

My view from the table.

Nevertheless, I hang around a bit in the café restaurant so I can finish Paul Coelho’s book, ‘The Alchemist’ which in my opinion is a moderately OK book, quite enjoyable. But based on the reviews I read on the internet, I was quite expecting thunderbolts and lightning, but helaas there was none that came my way. I understand the moral lessons Coelho is trying to convey to his readers but perhaps I look at life now differently—practically, academically and sometimes cynically. Must be the coming of the old age, perhaps.
