San Francisco Hot Clam Chowder in Sourdough at Alioto's Restaurant

My travels are not complete without recognizing and sampling the local food and I must confess that this part of the agenda has undoubtedly become a crucial part of all my travels. I must try the local cuisine, at least 1 dish, if not, a local drink please!

So, what have I found in San Francisco? Well, I am sure there are other San Francisco signature dishes out there but for me, in this trip, there are 2 lovely fares that I found very iconic to San Francisco.

(1) Hot Clam Chowder in Sourdough
(2) Steamed Dungeness Crab (entry to follow soon)

Clam Chowder is actually an US east coast tradition with its roots in New England, Rhode Island, Delaware and New York. Now, what makes the San Francisco Clam Chowder special, which is a variation of the creamy New England-style, is the sourdough bread bowl that goes with it, a very San Francisco invention. Sourdough bread was made popular in Northern California as the prime bread baked during the California Gold Rush in 1848-1855. I’ll post more stories about sourdough later, but the sourdough bowl with the hot clam chowder in it, is truly a San Francisco signature dish.

So here is moi with my ‘Hot Clam Chowder in Sourdough’ for lunch at Alioto’s located in the Fisherman’s Wharf.

The Hot Clam Chowder can be ordered everywhere in San Francisco, in fast food places, to-go/take-away, along the little food stalls in the Fisherman’s Wharf or in regular and fancy restaurants. It’s actually quite good! This one I had in Aliotto’s is 4 stars out of 5. Alioto’s also has beautiful views to the wharf which is pretty cool for a dining experience.

One must not leave San Francisco without trying this! Unless of course you do not eat seafood.
