A piece of Belgium in a secret church restaurant in Utrecht: Olivier
Trivia: Did you know that beside the humongous only mall (the older generation say it is an ugly mall) in Utrecht, Hoog Catharijne, there is a schuilkerk which means, a secret church?
‘Maria-Minor’ circa 16th century, also known as Huis Clarenburg is an old catholic church located on Achter Clarenburg street and is on the list of Utrecht’s preserved national monuments. The former secret or underground church is now transformed into a lively bar and restaurant offering yummylicious Belgian cuisine and my favourite, Belgian beers. Welcome to the ‘Belgisch Beer Café Olivier Utrecht’.
They have a wide variety of Belgian ‘real’ beers available for picking on the menu (while writing this I am taking note to come back soon!) and because I was lusting for something fresh, fruity and sparkling, I ordered a Kriek Boon. Yummy cherry beer. We had Dutch bitterballen with mustard snack to go with our Saturday afternoon drinks.
Kriek Beer is sweet, sparkly and fruity, great for ladies who do not drink beer =)
Outside was raining cows and sheep. The earth has probably shifted its tectonic plates and mother nature is confusing Europe with Asia. We are having some sort of tropical monsoon rain this summer in the Netherlands. It already feels so autumn when we are just halfway through the season! Honestly, I can’t wait to escape this horrible weather madness. Like pronto.
At any rate, the beer church restaurant provided us a temporary hiding place from the onslaught of the rain. After the shopping chore, which meant getting partly soaked, this was heavent sent.
Because this bier café restaurant is very popular during weekends, it can take some time to be seated otherwise there is always room to stand around the bar.
Belgisch Bier Cafe Olivier Utrecht (popular known as Cafe Olivier) is located beside shops, Zeeman and Xenos, across Mammoni near Febo. From the outside facade, you would not believe or expect to find an old church inside. Really cool.
