Korean Food: ‘Galbi’ (Korean BBQ) and ‘Bibimbap’ in Itaewon
This is probably our favourite dinner in Seoul!
‘Galbi’ literally means ribs but it’s really all about grilling aka Korean BBQ. The grilling happens right in front of you, on the dinner table. The most popular meats, and they are usually marinated, are beef and bacon. ‘Bibimbap’ on the other hand is a rice and vegetable bowl but served differently. They were on my priority list of food to be discovered in this trip. In Itaewon we managed to try them both.
Busan Galbi is the name of the restaurant and on the same street we saw another galbi place. Each table here has its own grill and accompanying exhaust fan dropped from the ceiling. It’s really cool.
I have always been very vocal about not fancying meat but I don’t mind having a little portion of grilled galbi from time to time. In addition, in a Korean restaurant you get served with those little side dishes, usually vegetables, called ‘Banchan’. I love them and I am always looking forward to these little heavenly fares!
Here at Busan Galbi, they require you to order a minimum of 2 meat servings. A wait staff helps with the grilling and service here is very quick.
Bibimbap on the other hand is a dish I call—mishmash. Because it’s an assortment of rice, fresh egg and vegetables, and you mix them all together with the red paste.
I cannot say that I am in love with Bibimbap. Maybe it has something to do with the quality of the Bibimbap I first tried on Korean Air. It did not impress me at all. The aftertaste of the meal was still on my tongue when I ordered this at Busan Galbi. Luckily, I did not let that stop me, my curiosity has won over. This order has proven why Bibimbap is a popular dish in Korea.
We enjoyed very much our tasty culinary journey in Korea. It’s very —how shall I call it?— entertaining and experiencing.

A heavenly spread of Banchans! Makgeolli is Korean rice wine. It is smooth but strong.

Bibimbap is all about mixing everything together. It is served on a very hot stone bowl.
