Bavarian Hotel in the Woods near Munich: Waldgasthof Buchenhaim

I knew that I didn’t want to stay in the busy city for my road trip holiday in Munich (Germany) and Salzburg (Austria) last spring. I however contemplated on extending an extra night and planned on seriously staying at the Von Trapp villa in Salzburg but decided to forego this idea last minute as I didn’t want to take an extra day at work. This holiday was made possible because of a public holiday (2 days) and a weekend all squeezed together.

Because I will be visiting the Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau district, one of the breath taking districts in the Bavarian region and Mozart’s birthplace, Salzburg, Austria, I decided to look for a hotel with free parking outside Munich, somewhere nestled in the south where I can easily escape to the highway. I found this hotel after a long thorough online search.

Unfortunately the website has no English page but you can find this hotel at booking.com and the rest of the hotel aggregator sites.

The hotel is located in Baierbrunn, 15 kilometres south of Munich. It’s direct surroundings are the Forstenrieder Park and the Grünwald Forest, and there is the Hellabrunn Zoo nearby as well. Just the perfect place for the nature lover kind and families with active children.

What really attracts me to this hotel is the Bavarian experience it offers. It is on top of my list! You know, I am in Bavaria so I need to breathe Bavaria. Waldgasthof Buchenhaim did not disappoint (except for my single bed, more on this below). From the country-style reception to its restaurant offering regional Bavarian cuisine and log-home design hotel guest rooms. There is even a large beer garden outside as well. Truly Bavarian.

In addition to this, there is a metro railway in front of the hotel. The Buchenhain S-Bahn Station will bring you in 20 minutes to Munich city centre. This is perfect for those who prefer to visit Munich with the metro since parking can be quite expensive in the city. But because it was raining a bit when I was there and I didn’t want to be dependent on the train’s schedule, I took the easy way out and settled for the comforts of my car.

Some more hotel perks: Free parking (lots of spaces). Free WIFI all over the hotel. A complimentary rich wide-variety breakfast. Hotel staff speaks excellent English, and even Dutch. Oh, did I mention earlier the surrounding natural parks and the metro connection to Munich?

The Reception Area, Gift Shop, Main Stairway and Hallways

While staying here I had a nice chat with one of the personnel who turned out to be Dutch. She moved to Deutschland because of love 20 years ago. She now has 2 children and a teener who might study in Amsterdam. She said that more and more guests from the Netherlands come to stay at the Waldgasthof Buchenhaim and she is always happy to speak to them. She was a very nice and pretty lady I must say.

You'd thought staircases are boring. Not here though.

Little touches of antiques here and there, in every nook and cranny, complete with an ancient baby carriage and a doll.

This is the hallway beside the antique gallery gift shop.

My Single Room

My only complaint is that I booked a single room, because the hotel only had single rooms available at the time of my booking. The bed was not really that comfortable though =( so that is a minus point, and the room looks more like a room in a dormitory, haha. Well, I stayed out most of the times anyway, but I really enjoyed the restaurant, the ambiance of the hotel and the nature surroundings.

If you stay here, take the double room. Bigger and better looking.

It is small but not so bad at all. It does remind me of dormitory rooms, especially with that wooden study desk. I had a similar one back home in Cebu, Philippines while growing up.

The Restaurant and My Breakfasts

They serve Bavarian dishes, and breakfasts are served here at the lovely restaurant as well. What do you think of the country-style Bavarian design of the restaurant? When I saw this, I had to control myself from taking my camera out of my bag. I told myself that I have enough time since I am staying here for 4 days.

I have only praises for the buffet breakfast. If you are a big breakfast person then you hit the jackpot here.

My Breakfasts

I am not the breakfast type but because this is complimentary I dragged myself to come here every morning. So this is my first day breakfast: bread, omelette, bacon and ham. Some coffee of course and orange juice as well.

My second day breakfast. I added some colour to my plate. Ah, tomatoes and cucumber always does wonders!

My third day breakfast is somewhat the same but I had some boiled eggs as well. I love them runny (and a pinch of salt), just the way they should be.

The Woods behind the Hotel

The hotel is a great place to unwind after a long day in Munich. You can have long walks outside or simply settle at the beer garden and have a drink. I did a short walk in the forest one morning after breakfast but didn’t veer deep into the forest as I was alone.

I will tell you a story. Years ago (circa 2006), I had a stupid experience when I hiked the Eltz forest in Germany. From Muden in the Mossel area I hiked the Eltz Forest to get to Castle Eltz (Burg Eltz), alone. Read entry here: Tries-Karden, Burg Eltz, Muden and Cochem. On top of that, the hike path was for experienced hikers only, basically the path less travelled. On the way back I did not meet anyone, and a woman alone in the woods and during twilight is never a good idea. I know, pretty darn stupid! I had illusions of a serial rapist and killer lurking behind me during the entire almost 1-hour forest hike back to Muden. What a mental torture, lol! So I promised myself, never again.

This isn’t a luxurious place to stay but for a real Bavarian experience, outside of the hustle and bustle of the city and with some nature in play for relaxation, I highly recommend this hotel.
