Not a Bavarian Dinner at the Munich Ratskeller

In the dark cellars of the impressive and beautiful Munich New Town Hall is this massive and traditional Bavarian restaurant called the Ratskeller, a Munich institution if I may add.

I just love Germany. Oh, Bavaria! The architecture in this region is simply divine, I had to pinch myself to make sure I am really seeing it. Now I’ve been to the crazy Hofbrauhaus and was totally blown away by the beautiful frescoes on the vaulted ceiling. Well, I did managed to drink a small pint of beer there as well, eat a hog and get chased by a drunk kid half my age. Luckily, at the Ratskeller, the median age is older and people here eat and not just drink beer, so there were no drunk kids lurking around in the corners.

First impressions looks and sounds touristy to me (with many local diners though so it couldn’t be that bad) but I can’t find fault at the inviting traditional Bavarian ambiance and interior. It’s just adorable and divine! And the design, oh so historical! There’s tables in nooks and crannies as well, now that’s just so cute. But I worry about the food, however with an atmosphere like this? I don’t care, I’d go for it, at least for a one-time experience =)

Now ladies and gents, let’s have a look at this beautiful Bavarian cellar restaurant shall we?

My Vegan Dinner

And finally, my dinner arrived! I’m sure many people would frown on my choice of dinner but I have been traumatised by all things pork in this holiday so I wanted something fresh and not too heavy. But just to clarify, I am not a vegan. I eat meat, I even eat pork, but they are not always my primary choice of food. It’s probably safe to say that 70%+- of the fares I prefer to eat are vegetables and fruits.

Anyway, just give me some slack for this one dinner okay?

It’s a lot I know, but they are all water. Pretty vegan salad + bretzel.

For some oomph, I ordered brie cheese + grapes (dried and fresh) + walnuts for my dessert. I cannot remember if I had  Reisling or a Gewurtzraminer.

The view from my table. Those vaulted ceilings are love, and look at those stained glass windows as well. Do take note that this is a cellar, under the ground, under the imposing town hall of Munich.

The Ratskeller has a few entrances and this one is the entrance inside the town hall’s courtyard.

Food rating: 3.5 stars out of 5. I know my instincts have warned me! Not the best restaurant in town but not expensive as well. The location though, and the historical ambiance and beautiful interior design compensates for what it lacked.

I still highly recommend this place for the Bavarian experience, at least for once and make sure that when you are here, you are not going to order what I did. Go all out for the Bavarian fare please to complete the Bavarian experience =)
