Ljubljana Central Market: Vodnikov Square (Vegetable & Fruit Market) & Dolničarjeva Street (Flower Market)

Ljubljana’s markets are a main attraction in the city. They are open from Monday to Saturday starting very early in the morning up to late in the afternoon. It is an embedded fragment of the city’s lifestyle and culture. Locals come here to buy food for their daily and weekly provisions. Some come here to catch up with each other and sit at the café terraces along the colonnaded market on the river embankment.

The Ljubljana Central Market

Opening times:

06:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday (until 16:00 in the winter)
06:00 to 16:00 Saturday
Sundays closed

Sharing a little bit of information here...

The central market comprises of several markets located in the old centre between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge. These are the following markets:

Vodnikov Trg (Vodnikov Square) – This is the big square with vegetable and fruit stands and near to the Dragon Bridge, and this particular post is about this market.

Pogačarjev Trg (Pogacar Square) – This is another market located parallel to Vodnikov, a favourite one and I’d like to call this the gourmet market. I have a delicious separate post about this because I went tasting and shopping here. Click on the link to read my blog entry and see lovely pictures of this market.

Dolničarjeva ulica (Dolničarjeva Street) – This is the flower market which is a small narrow street from Vodnikov Square exiting to Pogacar Square. You will see pictures below.

Plečnik’s covered markets – These are the colonnaded buildings along the Adamič-Lunder embankment on the Ljubljanica River and the Seminary building (Pokrita Tržnica) between the two market squares. Here you can find bakeries, café restaurants, cheese stands, butcher shops selling dry-cured meat products, fish vendors and more. More about this on a separate post.

For this entry I am posting pictures of Vodnikov’s vegetable and fruit market and Dolnicarjeva’s flower market.

This is the Vodnikov Trg (Vodnikov Square) which is just below the Ljubljana Castle. The lift going up to the castle is just right across.

I really get excited when I am visiting a produce market. The explosion of colours are just amazing.

Pumpkin is a popular vegetable in Slovenia. They make use of the pumpkin seed and turn it into gourmet-table and cooking oil.

Crunchy radicchio for salad.

Vodnikova market square and to the left is (one of) the Plecnik covered markets.

Pickled cabbage or sauerkraut (in Deutsch) is also popular in Slovenia.

I love this picture... the variety of produce and the colours...

I think I can ID these vegetables easily: white carrots, sweet potatoes and white radishes.

These though I have no idea.

I still have not figured out why they sell their salad greens like this. Mixing salad greens, especially baby leaves are called mesclun.

The market is very busy all throughout the day.

Flowers are also sold on Vodnikov market square however a bigger variety of cut flowers are sold at the adjacent street Dolnicarjeva ulica.

This is the flower market on Dolmicarjeva Street:

All colours of roses. Perhaps some of these came from the Netherlands =)

They also sell dried-preserved flowers here. Many of them are formed into wreaths or sold in baskets. I wonder if there is a certain ocassion they use the dried flowers for.
