French Alps: Village of Samoëns 1600

Dutchman and I visited the alpine village of Samoëns from our basecamp in Flaine. The village is part of the Grand Massif ski resort, which is by the way a great place for Nordic walking during summer.

We just checked the webcam of Grand Massif and although the skiing season is over, it still is very much white in the Alps. The snow has not melted yet. However, you can only ski on top of the mountains, above the tree line. I guess it’s mainly the locals and the hardcore skiers and snowboarders who do this now.

I really wished we have visited the main historical Samoëns village but it will take us some time to get down to the valley and I didn’t like rushing things. I want to take it slow and spend some time cafe terracing and enjoying my surroundings. We also need enough time to get back up the mountain and take a series of connecting lifts and skiing in between to Flaine by 15:00, otherwise we will be stuck here which is not a good thing. This usually means shelling out money for a very expensive cab ride back to Flaine. So having said that, we have decided to stay in Samoëns 1600, the upper Samoens village.

The slopes from Flaine to here were very nice, huge and wide. The alpine views were also stunning. Although there were some parts along the way that were somewhat icy, as they were shadowed by the mountains. I hate icy slopes. I tend to lose my confidence when I feel the icy scratch under my skis.

We also saw a rescue helicopter airlifting someone injured here in Samoëns 1600. This is not the first time we have seen such event. I had to remind myself and the Dutchman that wintersport is a risky sport so we need to employ safety precaution. Which is why I do not like going during peak season when it is madly crowded on the slopes and you actually have more chances of crashing into someone.

Here are some of the pictures we took of Samoëns 1600.

We stopped here as well for a quick rest and drink before reaching Samoens 1600 =)

Main slope area of Samoens 1600 where the lifts crisscross each other.

Beautiful mountains. Unfortunately I cannot ID them but we were in the Chamonix and Mont Blanc area. In fact the Grand Massif is facing Mont Blanc.

Another selfie!!!

This is a ski class. They were practicing getting down a steep slope.

A draglift, I do not like them at all. We call them sleeplift or pannenkoeklift.

Can you see the slopes?

A halfway house which is a cafe and restaurant.

An injured wintersporter is being carried by paramedics to the rescue helicopter.

This Chariade lift in Samoens 1600 lift will bring only halfway up in the slopes. You would need to take a few more connecting lifts to reach the summit.
