Domestic and Culinary Life
My weekend was rustig (relaxed) because I didn’t do much. The Dutchman did as a matter of fact, most of the house chores except for cooking. He had always told me… and my relatives, his relatives, my friends, his friends, and yes, even acquaintances… that I, failed gratuitously in the housekeeping department. He will not even let me get near to the darn vacuum cleaner…
“J put that thing (vacuum cleaner) down! I don’t trust you with these things, you know nothing about cleaning”, scolds the Dutchman.
*Me pouting*
“Whatever you clean always has some traces left the next day!” he continues.
“Alright, alright… you take care of cleaning the whole flat then!” I muttered in resignation.
On second thought, I think I am such a bloody lucky woman. Ah, life!
What I need to do to make up for my domestic deficiency is to beseech his manly stomach. Amusingly though, the Dutchman thinks that food is just a matter of and for SURVIVAL. Don’t worry, I am currently evangelizing and sensitizing his faculties to take pleasure in the joys of culinary world, and all the assortment of healthy and palatable nourishments that I provide with zest on the table.
While I stayed at home bumming last Sunday, the Dutchman was mowing his parent’s yard, they are now in Italy for a few months on vacation, and their backyard badly need reinforcement, if not it will turn fast into a wild jungle.
The salad greens, Krullend Andijvie (Curly Endive) and Kropsla (Butterhead lettuce) from my father in law’s home greenhouse. Gardening is his hobby. He also has a separate garden, a few kilometers away from home, where he plants more vegetables, fruits, and flowers.
“For you...” he grinned as he handed me a plastic bag upon arriving home and stepping inside the foyer. Um, well, he laid it down on the floor. Ugh, Dutch-Men…
I took a peek. “Oh nice, salad greens!” I said in surprise.
“Took it from my father’s garden.” Dutchman added.
Mm, I am going to make them into yummy salads this week.
On another note, I have decided to make a weekly entry about food since it’s part of my life’s passion, not eating though, but the making and experimenting of delectable cuisine.
Ever since I was a teenager, ‘twas when I learned how to cook and bake, my family back in the Philippines had always preferred that I stand behind the kitchen’s cooking burner. I didn’t mind because I loved doing it. The home cooking performance didn’t last long though, at 22, I left home to seek a life for myself, so no more feeling chef nights!
Here’s a preview of the palatable chows I whipped up last week.
Sauteed Beef Tagliatelli
A different version from the usual pasta served with sauce and topped with cheese. Cooked with pure olive oil... spiced and cured up beef sauteed with brocolli, carrots, and herbs.
Radish Sun Dried Tomato Garden Salad
I got inspired by some of the creamy Dutch salads using radish in it, so I whipped this up. Take out the cream (or mayo) and replace it with healthy olive oil please!
Pork Asparagus
It is asparagus season and they are relatively cheap! Notice how small the grilled cured pork is? Well this is my plate not the Dutchmans =). Grilled is healthier, you take the fat out during the process.
Apple Bell Pepper Salad
I had enough of using salad greens, so I mixed up the tricolor bell peppers: yellow, green, and red with the rest of the apples. I say, CRUNCHY!
Tex-Mex Nachos
This so far is the unhealthiest I ever cooked last week, but as they say... from time to time, we just have to indulge. Ground beef cooked with Italian mix herbs, tomatoes, spring onions, chicory, and corn.
Ceasar Salad
This is still the Dutchmans favorite but I go easy on this because the creamy dressing, parmesan cheese, and boiled eggs are fattening. But it sure always is a nice variety to olive oil based salads.
Yum, looks good! It seems to me that you're a really good cook, here we never eat that varied, because of all the allergies! I wonder what my mum used to cook before she had us...?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, did you know a sink is a breeding place for bacteries? It would be better washing vegetables and all in a bowl... My mum told me once you can get food poisening from letting your food touch the sink!
Elja, The sink a breeding place for bacteria? Eew, maybe! Actually, those lettuces were SO DIRTY with all the earth/dirt thats why I had to put them in the sink. There were even some tiny insects in them, but I made sure to clean the sink before laying them to clean. As for vegetables and fruits that I am about to prepare and cook, I don't lay them in the sink but instead in my big plastic strainer.
ReplyDeleteThere was this show I once seen on TV saying that those hand towels are rich with bacteria. So here at home we don't use them. I have instead paper towels that I can always throw away after.
Hi Peri, Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love cooking and won't say NO to any ocassion that I can cook, only when I am sick :-)
oooh... i want tex-mex!!!
ReplyDelete:) I think cleaning the sink before you put them in was a very wise decision;)! Yeah, I heard about hand towels being rich with bacteria. Outside the house my mum always forbids me to use them! Better your own bacteria than someone else's I guess... :S!
ReplyDeleteThe Dutchman cleans?! Ha Ha, does he wear a skirt too?
ReplyDeleteJust kidding. Seriously though, can I borrow him this weekend before the wife gets home?
Rik
AnP, Watchout for the salt of the Nachos and the fat in the meat!
ReplyDeleteElentari, I know what you mean... I always don't like those restaurants or places where they put hand towels by the sink for everyone to use. Eeek.
Rik, You sure want the Dutchman? Send a plane ticket to NL and € 100 per hour cleaning fee billed under my name. Make it € 100 x 5 hours coz I am sure you pretty messed up everything at home, haha. QUICK! or I will change my mind!
DL, Thanks dear :-)
ReplyDeleteHm, you are giving me ideas there. Well, my sister in law actually has invited me to teach cuisine around summer (or after summer?) at a school here in NL. The director of the school already approved it, though they wanted it Filipino cuisine, but I told her - MY FILIPINO VERSION. I am not so fond of Filipino food because of the meat and all the fat in it. That reminds me to follow her up and see if it will push through.
Also, starting a restaurant here in NL is not easy. I first have to get into a course/study, have myself certified... of course invest and make a business plan, and looking for the right place or area for the resto is another challenge! I don't think I am up for this because running a business like this is a BIG HEADACHE. You simply cannot just trust it to someone else, you must be hands-on with the business everyday and I WANT MY HOLIDAYS, WEEKENDS, and FREE DAYS. I am so selfish, haha
Wow,we always get nice meal in this restaurant, este blog. I still have a little hangover after the whole night event.
ReplyDeleteAra, Hey, please post in your blog your wicked night out and the hungover experience! Who did you go out with?
ReplyDeletewhy bother cleaning the house when you can get a housecleaner to come in once a week? that really saves alot of time, and no need to worry cleaning supplies .. they bring 'em.
ReplyDeletei, too, love the cesar salad - when at a sit-down restaurant, i often order one as a side or main course. but i don't care to have big pieces of anchovies, i prefer the blender to be on high speed.
mouth-watering! i'm tired of eating chicken and shawarmas here! hehehe.
ReplyDeleteMy "diet for summer" started today, but after reading your blog....I headed to the kitchen and wolfed down 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a glass of cocoa. Bad, bad jori!
ReplyDeletelewlew
Jors, I think you're a creative cook!;)Nammmm all looks yummy!
ReplyDeleteOH btw,I love veges & I surely will try your red pepper apple salad (can you tell pls.what sauce did use?)
Nam LaMore, A house cleaner is what I want! But what can I do when the Dutchman volunteers? Hehe. I used to have someone come to my flat in Manila every Saturday. She does all the cleaning, laundry, and ironing. She would first do the laundry (washer so its rather quick), then clean while the clothes get dry... and tropical climate so they get dried up real fast, then iron them before she leaves. The only thing I do is make lunch and afternoon snack for her :-) while I internet and watch TV. Darn, I miss those days. Let me guess, you hire help? Think it was CPK (forgot what that stands for, think its an American resto) who has really yummy Cesar Salad.
ReplyDeleteTarkheena, Yeah, asparagus season rocks! Have you seen the prices when they are not in season? Ridiculous!!! So we better grab every opportunity now. Oh, another salad couple, hehe. Re: dressing, I do many variations. Sometimes I use the mixed ones sold in the supermarkets but I mix them with other stuff. Or other times, I make my own dressing, like tonight I made mine. I know what you mean about cooking for other people... especially if they are paying, the thought scares me haha.
silentmode_v2, Hi there! Welcome to my virtual world. I checked your site earlier, will check it again coz I didnt have a good look. Wonder if you get lots of vegetables in Dubai? Shawarma is also big here coz we have lotsa arabs in this country. But those are HUGE!!! hehe
lewlew, Silly girl. What about your Graham Crackers, you forgot to wolf them down too?
ReplyDeleteYou and Dan need to get your asses down to the Balearic islands this summer!
Hey, I am on diet too... no more snacking for a week and I lost 3 kilos, need more to lose but today I cheated and bought those evil dutch snacks on the wall. Yes, I am very BAD :-(.
schatzli, You and M are really PARTNERS! Partners at work and partners at home. By the way, Dutchman cleans the bathroom and toiet too (they are separate)... but I clean the kitchen, the whole kingdom of kitchen is mine, though sometimes he wants to use the elft over rug from the bathroom floor to clean the kitchen, so I let him hehe. Chef M must be a splendid cook, would want to taste his obra maestra! What is it?
And oh yeah, the Dutchman can get along with M if its about domestication haha, well Dutchman also has worked with many Swiss, though I don't know if those were interesting experiences. He thinks some swiss (in the banking world) are paranoid about bank secrecy lol.
Re: prito... I really learned to dislike prito, especially deep fry? EeewwwW!!!!!!!!!!! No way! It also smells like crazy! Though sometimes, I eat fried stuff... when I have cravings (im still a Pinay), but deep fry just makes my skin crawl AT TIMES, haha.
CheH, Thankies dear! Sayang natapos nating Fine Arts hehe.
Re: the Tri-color bell pepper apple salad... try adding cucumbers and olives, they are yummier with it. For the dressing, I can give you 2 options:
The fresh naturel dressing:
1. naturel dressing (which u can find in the supermarket in bottles)
2. extra virgin olive oil
3. salad herbs/salade kruiden (which u can also find in the supermarket, the brand I use is SILVO)
4. dash of 4 seasons pepper
Creamy Balsamic dressing:
1. Dark balsamic vinegar
2. extra virgin olive oil
3. honey (or sugar)
4. mustard
5. dash of 4 seasons pepper
6. dash of powdered ginger
(you can also add a drop of lemon for this)
ENJOY!!!! :-)
managing a house can be very taxing. i do not have domestic workers these days, but i used to. one at point, i must have had four sets of house keys out:
ReplyDelete* gardener (he needed access to the garage)
* housekeepers (two of them, one to clean the house, other to clean the roommates' rooms)
* pool cleaner
* dog walker
after a few years of this, the madness had to stop. luckily i've simplified my life!
Grace, You remind me to buy more "Asperges' this weekend!
ReplyDeleteGuess its OK to be the cook/chef but if ur the owner? Ugh, hard... you've got to BE THERE, as per advise from people I knew who had/have restos.
Nam LaMore, My oh my, you LOCKED them out, haha! Now, that is indeed funny... did you ever get back to let them in?
Whew, you're life before indeed looked complicated! I wonder how you manage to simplify it?
I grew up with a nanny and a help, that's why I am such a lousy bad girl with cleaning. STILL not an excuse, I think I am a rotten case, haha.
