Expatica Article: Old Europe - glorious or just mouldy

As the Netherlands is strategically located in the heart of Europe, the country deserves a nomination as the perfect home base when travelling to other European cities, villages and islands.

And because of this, I delight.

I delight in the idea that I can explore another country with just a car.

I delight in the idea that the rest of Europe is just one to three hours away by plane.

I delight in the idea that I can experience another culture so easily and so nearby.

I delight in the idea that I can travel back through time and history when visiting these places.

I delight in the idea that I can always have a weekend escape somewhere in Europe without costing me an arm and a leg.

I delight in the idea that the Europeans themselves are very passionate about travelling, hence the wide array of attractive holiday packages available at my fingertips, the cut-throat competition that helps bring down the prices, and the scores of last-minute offerings that is now flooding my computer screen!

Ah, I just delight in travelling.

My friend Bubbles, whom I was travelling with in the Balkans, had a request that we stop over at Medjugorje. We got lucky because Medjugorje was on the way to Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is our next stop. Half an hour into our driving, we reached Medjugorje. Parking was not easy to find, but we struck lucky and found a space not too far away from the Saint James Church. Medjugorje or Medugorje is a world-famous Catholic pilgrimage site due to the Our Lady of Medjugorje, who claimed to have seen a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, to 6 Bosnian children at  Križevac Hill .

Bangkok, Thailand: The Story Behind the Impressive Serpent Statue at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport

If you fly out from the new Bangkok ‘Suvarnabhumi’ International Airport, the huge, colourful and impressive mythical statue popular in Thai and Indian culture, the 3-headed serpent Naga (his name Vasuki) in a spectacular tug-of-war scene with its mid-section body wrapped around a stone, which is actually a mountain, and Vishnu one of the supreme deities in Hindu is sitting on top, will greet you as you finish immigration and step inside the airport’s duty free shopping area. You just have to stop and be dazzled by it. The whole installation is impressive and as I took pictures I wondered what the story is behind this scene. After much googling around, I found out that the statue is very famous in Hindu culture and religion. This legendary scene is called ‘Samudra Manthan’ in other words in English – the ‘Churning of the Ocean of Milk’.
