Marrakech dress code: No showing of skin!

Here in the picture you can see women conservatively dressed in niqabs. I did not take this shot to take pictures of the women. I took this shot to take a picture of the name of the main street (Avenue Prince Moulay Rachid) that leads to Djemma el Fna (spelled as Jemma el Fna as well).

Black is very popular in Marrakech but we saw many women, especially the younger ones who are sporting bright colours.

We have also seen many women wearing the high secured burkas and the semi-burkas called niqab. Unlike a burka (or burqa) wherein the woman is totally covered like a walking tent, the niqab have a slit opening for the eyes.

One time while getting ready for our Ourika Valley excursion, Blondine decided that she will wear shorts. I told her it is not a good idea. Anyway, she insisted thinking it will be alright but by the time we emerged out of the alleyways into the main streets of the medina, we were followed by harsh stares... then catcalls... then more harsh stares.

We squirreled back to the riad. This time Blondine changing into something more modest in the eyes of Moroccan men, haha.

Lesson learned!

My friend Bubbles, whom I was travelling with in the Balkans, had a request that we stop over at Medjugorje. We got lucky because Medjugorje was on the way to Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is our next stop. Half an hour into our driving, we reached Medjugorje. Parking was not easy to find, but we struck lucky and found a space not too far away from the Saint James Church. Bangkok, Thailand: The Story Behind the Impressive Serpent Statue at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport

If you fly out from the new Bangkok ‘Suvarnabhumi’ International Airport, the huge, colourful and impressive mythical statue popular in Thai and Indian culture, the 3-headed serpent Naga (his name Vasuki) in a spectacular tug-of-war scene with its mid-section body wrapped around a stone, which is actually a mountain, and Vishnu one of the supreme deities in Hindu is sitting on top, will greet you as you finish immigration and step inside the airport’s duty free shopping area. You just have to stop and be dazzled by it. The whole installation is impressive and as I took pictures I wondered what the story is behind this scene. After much googling around, I found out that the statue is very famous in Hindu culture and religion. This legendary scene is called ‘Samudra Manthan’ in other words in English – the ‘Churning of the Ocean of Milk’.
