Typically Dutch 011: Bittergarnituur in Valkenburg

For those who are not on a diet...


Bittergarnituur is a typically Dutch snack. It is a mix of Dutch and Asian deep-fried specialties, from lumpia to chicken chunks to bitterballen, and usually served pre dinner while having (alcoholic) drinks. We were not really hungry so we settled for this unhealthy fried treat. Sometimes you have got to give in.


And some Portuguese red port (the biggest port glass I have seen so far) to go with it in Restaurant Bombarino located in the centrum of Valkenburg aan de Geul in the south of the Netherlands, Limburg province.

Port is 5 stars but the bittergarnituur is 3 stars out of 5. Blondine complained though that she got sick and threw up upon arriving home. Ayayay, who would have been the culprit? Other than the bittergarnituur that we last ate... uhm, okay.

It was a cozy, artistic and elegant restaurant by the way.

My friend Bubbles, whom I was travelling with in the Balkans, had a request that we stop over at Medjugorje. We got lucky because Medjugorje was on the way to Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is our next stop. Half an hour into our driving, we reached Medjugorje. Bangkok, Thailand: The Story Behind the Impressive Serpent Statue at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport

If you fly out from the new Bangkok ‘Suvarnabhumi’ International Airport, the huge, colourful and impressive mythical statue popular in Thai and Indian culture, the 3-headed serpent Naga (his name Vasuki) in a spectacular tug-of-war scene with its mid-section body wrapped around a stone, which is actually a mountain, and Vishnu one of the supreme deities in Hindu is sitting on top, will greet you as you finish immigration and step inside the airport’s duty free shopping area. You just have to stop and be dazzled by it. The whole installation is impressive and as I took pictures I wondered what the story is behind this scene. After much googling around, I found out that the statue is very famous in Hindu culture and religion. This legendary scene is called ‘Samudra Manthan’ in other words in English – the ‘Churning of the Ocean of Milk’.
