Napa, California Detour: Lake Hennessey
It has always been our penchant to wander away from the normal route when travelling. Like with the Silverado Trail that we initially didn’t know of, it was gamble for us to take this quieter route of Napa Valley that proved otherwise to be a lovely road with stunning vineyard and mountain views. So far our Napa Valley experience cannot be any better. I came here to see the vineyards and I am in the middle of it.
Anyway, while we were driving east of St. Helena on the Silverado Trail to the direction of Calastoga, we came to a fork and we were faced to decide which route to take—shall we continue on the Silverado Trail or take this detour? Our instincts tells us to go down the less beaten path so we turned right to the smaller winding road. We were not really sure where this road will lead us to but we were quite curious what lies on the other side of the hills. And look what we’ve found? Lake Hennessey

The area is so tranquil and a little drop on the water would be enough to stir the lake. We stopped by here and I went for a walk, thoroughly inspecting my surroundings while the Dutchman got a little bit adventurous and mounted a rock wall. When I saw him on top of the boulder, I almost shrieked like a hysterical middle aged mom—‘What the hell are you doing up there?! Come down you silly kid! Now!’ And it didn’t help much at all when he almost trip down the rocks while clambering the massive rock. I am just so glad he is not anymore into parachuting, paragliding and bungee jumping otherwise I will have a heart attack and go through a serious catharsis program. Sigh, boys will be boys even if they age.
Anyway, I later found out that Lake Hennessey is a man-made lake that acts as a reservoir for the Conn Creek Dam nearby. This alleviates the flow of water downstream to Napa that is susceptible to flooding.
The lake is also well known as a fishing recreation area and we saw a few gentlemen doing their thing. Its a nice place as well to go boating. Types of fishes abundant in the lake are: Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, Catfish and Black Crappie
