In California: Where to have a drink in Sausalito and the amalgam of European-American fast food dining experience
Just a little break from my Jordan travel diaries—I still have many entries to post from my California trip last March (2011), so in between Jordan entries I will be posting them.
In Sausalito, we found this charming and elegant bar and restaurant on wooden stilts on the bay harbour along the town’s promenade called Scoma’s. The Italian bar and restaurant’s highly desirable on-the-shore location, the very romantic ambiance I must say, moreover, the sweeping lovely panorama of San Francisco and just the idea that you are almost floating on water— hands down, this is the best place to have lunch and dinner or even just drinks in Sausalito.
At any rate, Dutchman and I really needed a drink and had we not found this place we would have ended up in Starbucks which we have been trying to avoid. Sitting in the bar in Scoma’s and looking out to the water gives me the feeling that I am inside a boat. Really cool.
Time flew quickly; the sun was setting down and dinner guests started pouring in to the establishment. It’s restaurant corner is located at the front side of the building, flaunting a beautiful view of the San Francisco skyline, while the bar where we are at is at the other end. For a restaurant like this and taking note that they are almost full, one must reserve in advance for a table.
Dutchman and I were not in the mood to dine fancily that night. We had a long day at the forest and at the rocky coast as well; we only came to Sausalito to finish our day with a drink. We want something quick to eat and then drive back to our hotel in San Francisco. So anyway, walking back to the car, we passed by this Italian pizza café—Taste of Rome. It looks like a busy yet a quick-to-order place.
We’re actually quite glad to eat here. Apart from the goal for this trip to enjoy and immerse in American culture, we were somehow thrown into a sort of European-American amalgamation dining experience. Europe for the Italian food. American for the California setting and fast food concept. Europe for the European Football Championships (Europa League) on TV. American for TV screens in cafes (in Europe this is not done, only sports cafes do this).
We drove back to our hotel in San Francisco looking forward to a very relaxing evening in our hotel room: doing nothing but watching American TV, which is an interesting topic altogether as well.
