Stockholm Pride 2011

When I was in Stockholm last August it was ‘Stockholm Pride’ meaning it was gay pride parade slash festival.

Friday night -- the guy at the hotel reception who earlier checked me in was gay, and his colleague who was manning the bar and was Filipino by the way, told me jokingly that tomorrow Saturday the gay colleague will become totally crazy during the pride event. It will be his day so to speak. Not sure what he meant by crazy? Painting the town with gay colours like rainbow perhaps, or something else? Hmm.



I thought the event will be big, just like in Amsterdam, so I didn’t really check the scope of the logistics. I am not gay okay but I like to see special events like these. I’ve been to the Amsterdam Gay Pride Parade a few times myself and knew what to expect.

Anyway, wrong move. The Stockholm Pride is nowhere the size of its Amsterdam sister so I didn’t really notice it during the day when I was wandering in the other side of town. I saw however a few people distributing flyers about the event early in the morning but didn’t really bother to take one as I thought, and I was then so sure that I will bump into the parade. Well, I didn’t.

These 2 fotos are the only ones I can show off in this blog. They are remnants of Stockholm’s Gay Pride 2011.

My friend Bubbles, whom I was travelling with in the Balkans, had a request that we stop over at Medjugorje. We got lucky because Medjugorje was on the way to Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is our next stop. Half an hour into our driving, we reached Medjugorje. Parking was not easy to find, but we struck lucky and found a space not too far away from the Saint James Church. Medjugorje or Medugorje is a world-famous Catholic pilgrimage site due to the Our Lady of Medjugorje, who claimed to have seen a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, to 6 Bosnian children at  Križevac Hill .

Bangkok, Thailand: The Story Behind the Impressive Serpent Statue at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport

If you fly out from the new Bangkok ‘Suvarnabhumi’ International Airport, the huge, colourful and impressive mythical statue popular in Thai and Indian culture, the 3-headed serpent Naga (his name Vasuki) in a spectacular tug-of-war scene with its mid-section body wrapped around a stone, which is actually a mountain, and Vishnu one of the supreme deities in Hindu is sitting on top, will greet you as you finish immigration and step inside the airport’s duty free shopping area. You just have to stop and be dazzled by it. The whole installation is impressive and as I took pictures I wondered what the story is behind this scene. After much googling around, I found out that the statue is very famous in Hindu culture and religion. This legendary scene is called ‘Samudra Manthan’ in other words in English – the ‘Churning of the Ocean of Milk’.
