Toledo, Spain: Maze of narrow alleys and the old man encounter
For the record, I knew that Toledo is a beautiful city and I should have done it justice but last June was not the best of timing when it comes to cultural trips. I just started with a new job then—ergo information overload, and coming back from a recent trip to England and a 1-week intensive course was not helping at all. The last thing I wanted to do during a long weekend trip is to exercise my brain and inspect all the cultural and historical wonders in Spain. I want to just walk, and walk, and walk. And sit in the terrace, drink wine and eat tapas.
Entering the ancient city of Toledo.
Upon alighting the panoramic bus in Toledo city centre, Blondine and I didn’t really know where to go. We didn’t have a map. We didn’t have a plan. We were too lazy to go to the tourist office as well to get local attractions information. It was actually refreshing to not have to plan.
Thus we decided to tread off the beaten thoroughfares. We wandered around the quiet backstreets. We climbed stairs and peeked into windows of homes. We let ourselves get lost in the maze of narrow cobble stone alleylanes until we found ourselves walking to the direction of the church—The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo.
If I didn’t have brain information overload I probably would have gone inside the church (and visit the Alcazar as well). It was the first time I felt I have had enough of churches and any historical building. A quick foto shoot outside the church would suffice I thought.
A block away from the church’s square I saw this little store and went inside to purchase some chips. The old man who owns the shop asked me if I am a Filipina and then he mentioned the Filipina model-socialite living in Spain, Isabel Preysler. All Spanish male specie knows Isabel Preysler. She is the ex-wife of Julio Iglesias and mother of Enrique Iglesias.
Anyway, it turns out that the old man is so taken by me? I am not sure if he was flirting or just really charmed but he wants to kiss me, lol. He was, like, 80 years old? I can already sense Blondine cringing beside me while I cannot contain my giggle. I thought it was a funny encounter. But, why is it that I always attract old Spanish men? Last year in Andalucia, I had several encounters and I was even with the Dutchman.
As we were looking for a restaurant to have lunch, he offered some advice, however Blondine and I couldn’t find the restaurant he recommended. We may have to look somewhere else.
Now sorry old man, no kiss =) Adios!
