The unknown ‘Rock Beach’ in Laganas

Dutchman and I found this secluded rock beach in Laganas, Zakynthos Island (Greece) by chance. We came from the mountain village of Keri and had drinks at the Keri Lighthouse enjoying the gorgeous views down to the Mizithres Rocks. For our next item in our agenda would be a nice beach to swim in and stay put for a couple of hours before we take our late afternoon lunch.

We have been driving from one beach to another in Laganas area and we could not really find the beach we are looking for. We almost gave up hope and the not-so-exciting looming thoughts of going to Laganas Beach was dangling at the back of our minds.

With the map in my hand, we followed a route to Porto Koukla. ‘Koukla’ in Greek means beautiful, a word I learned when I was in Athens with a friend who is almost Greek several years back. She was quick to engage in Greek with the cabby who told her I was ‘koukla’.

Thus, when I saw Porto Koukla on the map, I thought it must be a nice place, however, when we got there we could not find the harbour, instead, we saw rows of houses and a tiny road that perhaps leads down to the beach, but it has a sign on it that saysprivate. We really didn’t have much patience to further investigate the surroundings so we turned around continuing our search when we saw another sign on a fork road leading to an unknown beach.

The adventurous spirit in us was stirred and we followed the little road to this unknown beach passing through charming ranks of olive trees, one after the other. We then reached to a small clearing. A handful cars and motorbikes were parked beside a nice looking tavern with an open terrace overlooking to the sea. Further ahead we saw 2 residential houses. On the small dirt road is a sign that says—‘BEACH. Only on foot, after the second house on the left’. There was no name of the beach. It was just called—BEACH.

It turns out that the beach is a rock beach. We right away fell in love with the place and decided to camp here for a few hours. This rock beach is in my favourite list. It has a charm of its own. It is a public beach but it feels like private being here, with the very few people who also discovered the place and it being off the beaten path. Dutchman was having a blast while I stayed put swimming near the rocks.

I am afraid of deep waters. I always have this strange icky feeling when I hang my feet freely in the dark waters and not knowing what is lurking down there. Eww. I might have watched too many episodes of Jaws during my childhood days!

Here are the rest of the pictures of this unknown rock beach:

The waters here are so blue. It must be deep.

Sunbathing on the rocks. No need for me, I am tan enough.

Bring your own chair here.

When I was young, I was also spent playing under the sun, on the beach, all day. My mom tells me that she does not recognise me anymore at the end of the day because I have become so dark.

Bring your own umbrella or parasol.

I know, my hat is a bit silly, but at least it gives me shade.
