The Poet's Hotel in Copenhagen: First Hotel Kong Frederik

In Copenhagen I stayed at the First Hotel Kong Frederik. The hotel is in a classical building in the heart of the city—Indre By and the interior is quite cosy and boutique-ish. On the hotel’s website it says, ‘The hotel has throughout the years been the choice of international performing artists and legendary Danish poets.’

I’m not sure what they mean by that but in the atrium lounge there is a library with a collection of leather bound books from world renowned novelists and poets. They are old, shabby from use, real leather bound books of Victor Hugo (French), Charles Dickens (English), Snorre Sturleson (Icelandic), Marlitt (German), John Galsworthy (English), Alexandre Dumas (French), Rudyard Kipling (English), Taylor Caldwell (American), Jan de Hartog (Dutch) and Richard Katz (German) amongst others. I took time going through the books and would have preferred to read or leaf through quickly some of them but they were all in Danish. I do not speak Danish.

I like my hotel room though. I loved the high ceiling. The room is spacious enough, I even have a nice reading corner that looks out to the street. The colours were my favourite—lovely shades of green. Many years ago when I was a Fine Arts Interior Design student I had this tendency to use the green palette all the time and my preferred hue was bottle green. I don’t know why but I was hooked to the green colour. My drawings were always in earth + black & white + green colour scheme. You can imagine that the room was a refreshing treat for me.

The bed and the pillows were very comfortable. They were heaven sent because on the second night of my stay in the city I became ill. There was free wifi internet and free mini bar as well that helped accompany me in the evenings. When sick, a good supply of drinks is crucial, and of course, the internet just in case. The only thing that is a minus in my stay at this hotel is the bathroom. They could use some facelift really.

Across the hotel is a discotheque that was blaring its music on Friday evening until Saturday morning. Teeners were screaming the whole time as well. This reminds me of our (Dutchman and moi) hotel room in Oslo, Norway. My room was facing the street but luckily I am not one of those that have a hard time falling asleep because of noise. I can understand though that for light sleepers, they must have a problem.

There was as well a road construction in front of the hotel which causes some slight albeit temporary inconvenience.

Overall, my stay here was fine. Location for me is very important. The hotel is near to everything. Stroget is just around the corner and the central train station is just a 10 minute (or less) walk.

In the arched corner you can find many leather bound old books. They really give a lovely character to the atrium and to the hotel.

Can you spot some of your favourites perhaps?
