Unspoiled Trinidad: magestic colonial ambiance and amazing architecture
When we were nearing the end of our Cuban holiday road trip, Blondine asked me which city or town in Cuba that is my favourite. Without thinking twice I said, ‘Trinidad!’
Trinidad is a world of its own; it is in fact a museum in itself. The town is listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and is a national treasure of Cuba. Every visitor who comes here will be blown away by her enticing age-old charm. Well, I was.
Founded in 1514 by Spanish conquistador, Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, this jewel of a place is a must see and visit when in Cuba. And unlike Havana Vieja that is speckled with buildings left to ruins, Trinidad on the other hand is an unblemished beauty. The old centre is restored to her former medieval colonial-times glory.
I can’t explain the feeling when we walked in the old centre. Stepping on the cobble stone streets and being engulfed in a kaleidoscope of pastel-coloured buildings and houses safeguarded with wrought iron grills, some with wooden barrotes, on windows and balconies. It’s a mixture of being brought back in time, delighting in the splendour around me and that bursting with curiosity and awe feeling at the same time.
The old centre is remarkably very well preserved, however, outside the old centre, the streets and houses are rundown and in desolation. Which is sadly a typical scene in Cuba. It is the reality.
Blondine and I decided that we will first walk around and discover the place. The old centre is not that big so it’s easy to see the sights quickly. Well, the main sights really are the colourful buildings and houses.

So when you are in Cuba, do not fail to visit this exquisite national treasure.
Trinidad is about 3-4 hours drive from Havana. Well, this is depending on how fast you drive and how quick you are able to find your way out of Havana, which in our experience was a nightmare.
