Culinaire in Ghent: Belga Queen

In July, I went to Ghent, Belgium with Blondine for a day of culinaire outing. Our plan was to have lunch at the ‘Pakhuis’ or at ‘Volta’. However, the Pakhuis Restaurant is closed, or has closed down, I am not sure anymore. We were just told that the restaurant is closed. I wanted to check out the other option which is Volta but we were already running late. Many restaurants are closing their kitchen at 14:30 so Blondine and I scurried back to the Graslei area and settled for interesting restaurant...

I held my breath when the waiter told us that the kitchen for the extensive lunch menu is already closed, however, he said that we can still order lunch from their short menu. Super big sigh of relief!

I so love loooong lunches. Here’s our lunch in Ghent:


First, our chilled Chardonnays.


Blondine's salmon salad: Salmon marinated with Rodenbach (Belgian beer) and herbs, mild mustard sauce, blintz and sour cream


My lunch: Belga Queen salad (marinated salmon, grey shrimps, dried ham from Little the Sûre valley, duck liver prepared in a towel and mixed salad). This was good, could have been better though. 3.8 stars out of 5.

Eet smakkelijk! The wine was very good though.


We shared the dessert: Creme Brulee

See-through Toilets

The interior design of the restaurant is forward in design and was quite striking. Steel and hanging hallways. And oh, especially the washroom. They have see-through toilets! But when you are inside and you lock the door, the see-through door becomes one-way mirror, so no worries =)

Belga Queen also has a lovely location on the Graslei with the view to the canal. Highly recommended place!

My friend Bubbles, whom I was travelling with in the Balkans, had a request that we stop over at Medjugorje. Bangkok, Thailand: The Story Behind the Impressive Serpent Statue at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport

If you fly out from the new Bangkok ‘Suvarnabhumi’ International Airport, the huge, colourful and impressive mythical statue popular in Thai and Indian culture, the 3-headed serpent Naga (his name Vasuki) in a spectacular tug-of-war scene with its mid-section body wrapped around a stone, which is actually a mountain, and Vishnu one of the supreme deities in Hindu is sitting on top, will greet you as you finish immigration and step inside the airport’s duty free shopping area. You just have to stop and be dazzled by it. The whole installation is impressive and as I took pictures I wondered what the story is behind this scene. After much googling around, I found out that the statue is very famous in Hindu culture and religion. This legendary scene is called ‘Samudra Manthan’ in other words in English – the ‘Churning of the Ocean of Milk’.
