Dreamy Vianden Castle
I still love castles but recently I’ve stopped visiting them inside, especially if they are massive like this Vianden Castle in Luxembourg. I just don’t have the patience anymore to inspect every nook and cranny of these monstrous fortresses. Unless it is a one-of-a-kind castle such as the Neuschwanstein (Germany) that I haven’t seen and visited yet but will in the near future, then I will pass.
The Vianden Castle was built between the 11th and 14th century and was in the ownership of the House of Nassau (the Dutch Royal Family comes from this house) but fell into ruins in the 19th century. The Grand Duke of Luxembourg transferred the ownership rights to the state in 1977. The state restored the castle to its former glory.

So that’s what I did when I was at Vianden--I passed. Admiring the lovely castle crowning the bucolic village in the valley from the distance was enough for me.
Seriously, I thought of going up to see the views of the village, and even drove the car all the way to the foot of the castle’s parking area, but I don’t know, I just let it slip. I sat there in the car looking up to the paved road to the castle thinking... should I go or should I not go.
Nah, I am not in the mood. I went to the village instead and had coffee with nut liquor and warm apple strudel.
Here are some of the castles that I visited this year, ooops I mean in 2012:
1) Castle of the Dukes of Brabant - Turnhout (Antwerp), Belgium. Visited from the outside only.
2) Castillo de Moro - Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. Because Blondine and I were given 50% off on the tickets.
3) Rosenborg Castle - Copenhagen, Denmark. Because the castle was quite small.
4) Molyvos Castle - Lesvos Island (North Aegean Islands), Greece. Visited from the outside only.
5) Arenberg Castle - Leuven, Belgium. Visited from the outside only.
