Saturday Street Market in Porto: Clerigos Market (Mercadinho dos Clerigos)

While I was searching for the travel agency to book my Douro River Valley Tour, I came upon this alternative street market at Rua Cândido dos Reis. It’s very near to my hotel, just around the block and around the corner from the Clerigos Church and Tower, hence the market is called ‘Mercadinho dos Clerigos’ (Clerigos Market).

Mercadinho dos Clerigos

This market is quite eccentric because it showcases a smorgasbord of items on sale. From arts & crafts, household antiques, paintings, vintage clothes & accessories, children’s toys to gastronomy from the local region, organic products and cool pre-loved (second hand) items.

I eyed an elegant vintage black evening bag that could easily go back to the 1950’s but since I was done with shopping, I let it drop. I didn’t want to be carrying stuff while I go around exploring the city. As well as, I have no more space in my luggage. Oh well, shit happens haha.

Nevertheless, I was quite lucky to have seen this street market because it is only open once a month—every last Saturday of the month.

Rua das Carmelitas

From the corner of this market is Rua das Carmelitas (this street intersects Rua dos Clerigos), a nice affluent street with upscale boutiques and where the famous Lello Bookstore is also located. The fashion stores here have lovely items on display and I WAS SO TEMPTED, but like I said, I have no more space in my luggage, so I just literally ‘window shopped’.
