Starred lunch at Steinberg castle and ah-mazing views to Wurzburg
My first stopover for my Munich and Salzburg road trip is Wurzburg in Lower Franconia, Bavaria. I need to stop somewhere to rest from driving, eat lunch and move my legs a bit.
Now I’ve been driving non-stop for almost 5 hours already and I was pretty annoyed of the bad weather because I could not speed up. The no speed limit highway is not serving its purpose? Patchy rains in the form of heavy downpours and light showers were all over Germany. I had to slow down to 80 km/per hour because the ABS of my car went bonkers. I see red stuff on my screen dial and I can feel the pressure on the wheels.
Moreover, I began to worry if I will be able to have lunch at the perfect terrace with a view of Wurzburg. This 1-star Michelin restaurant (a castle and a hotel as well) has won many awards and one of them is for the best terrace in Wurzburg. I cannot wait!
Views to Wurzburg
This is what greeted me when I arrived at the restaurant. And the weather cooperated, it was actually dry and 20C! Just lovely. After the rainy drive I felt so lucky to have arrived in dry weather Wurzburg.
I actually passed by the old town and saw the old bridge and I was like WOW. But I have an agenda to stick to so I drove past the old town following the command of my GPS to Schloss Steinberg.

The restaurant has a 1-star Michelin under her belt. I came here not only for the food really but for the spectacular panorama of the vineyards and the old town. However, I was quite tempted to order the 3-course set lunch menu but in the end I managed to control myself. I do not have the luxury of time! Sigh. This is just a stopover and I can’t afford to stay at this place longer than required. So ordered 1 dish , a glass of Riesling and then an espresso.

Franconian wine country
Wurzburg is also home to the only wine region in Bavaria—Franconian wine country. I just love seeing the rolling hills of vineyards, they are stunning beauties of man's work and nature . I saw plenty of these during my recent trip to the Alsace wine region in France which I will be blogging later.

The vineyard rolling terraces can be spotted upon arriving Wurzburg along the main highway. And a nice place to view them and be in the middle of its greenery is at Steinberg Castle Restaurant and Hotel located on the Wurztburger Stein Vineyard. The establishment is literally surrounded with vinery.
I’m very glad to have discovered this place, even for just a quick stopover. The lunch was lovely, the views relaxing and amazing, and it’s nice to learn a thing or two about a new place as well. I’d love to come back to Wurzburg, discover the ancient city and explore further its wine kingdom.
3 more driving hours to go to get to my Bavarian hotel in Baierbrunn (southern suburb of larger Munich area).

I started with a Riesling from the region.
Ordered the squid dish prepared in 3 ways: stuffed, grilled on a bed of tomato tagliatelli and sauteed with garlic vegetables and wild asparagus from the season. I personally thought that the dill herbs decoration was an overkill.
I got an extra little bowl of tomato tagliatelle. Very nice.
Espresso to close my lovely lunch. Happy!
