Pike Perch lunch and Alpsee views at Alpenrose Am See in Hohenschwangau
I have to confess that halfway through the castle tour at Neuschwanstein (my schedule was at 13:30 and it finished an hour later), I was already daydreaming what my lunch is going to be like at Alpenrose Am See – Ooh, what am I going to order? Should I take a starter? – There was a cafe at the castle but they were serving cafeteria (snack) food and I did not want to spoil my appetite for later.
But what I am really excited about is the restaurant itself. Alpenrose Am See has the best location and views in Schwangau, situated on the Alpsee (Alp Lake) beside the Museum of the Bavarian Kings.

Finally I arrived at Alpenrose at 15:30! Since it was a bit late for lunch, there were very few diners.
I did small talk with the friendly attendant who empathised with me about the miserable weather. He said it was sunny yesterday. A nameplate on his chest suggested that he could be Hungarian, so I asked him if he is from Hungary. He asked in return how I knew. I told him that I’ve worked with Hungarians and have been to Hungary twice so I am familiar with Magyar names, but I did not tell him that I am just a curious nut, haha.

So this is going to be a long overdue lunch and my stomach is raging mad already.
After quickly perusing the menu, I settled for the – ‘Roasted fillet of Pike Perch on creamy noodles with garden sorrel pesto’. No starters and desserts as I will be having normal dinner later in the evening in Munich. For wine, I picked a glass of chilled Riesling from the region.
Luckily the kitchen was quite fast with their execution and here is the delivery:
And here is my verdict as well:
I’d rate the pike fish 4.3 stars out of 5. This was really good, nicely done and almost perfect. Although the tagliatelli and its sauce were tasty, I am rating it with 3 stars because it was too salty for my liking and some of the pasta were stuck together.
I still highly recommend this place. For those who come to Schwangau to see the Neuschwanstein (and Hohenschwangau) Castle, come over here after for lunch, snack or drinks. The location and the views alone are simply stunning. When the weather is nice, you can sit outside. You will not regret!

After lunch I did a little stroll along the lake. While walking with my umbrella and staring at the beautiful and serene surroundings, I thought -- What if I came here on a dry and sunny day? *sigh* I am sure the place would be breath taking and it would be impossible to leave quickly.
Too bad the weather was not at its best =(
