A Showdown of Trishaws in Malacca, Malaysia
There is one sure thing that will catch your attention, and perhaps even your breath as well upon stepping foot in Malacca (also known as Melaka): The flamboyant and multi-coloured TRISHAWS
You have to give it to them for their clever, flashy and facetious creativity. Hello Kitty on the trishaw hood? A bumble bee catterpillar-ish as a canopy? And a carnival of colourful plastic flowers?
Each Trishaw is Unique!
The trishaws convene around the Dutch Square in front of the Christ Church building and at the grounds of St. Paul’s Ruins. Sometimes they can be seen at the street entrance to Jonker Street hawking their services as well. Moreover, you will not only see them coming but you will hear them from a kilometre away! Their all-pervading loud disco music blasts into the air as they make the tour rounds in the city, making these trishaws the kings of the road in Malacca city center. With how things go, you’d wonder if these drivers were tone-deaf to begin with.
They actually remind me of the jeepneys and tricycles back home in the Philippines. When I was younger, they would compete with each other on who has the coolest jeepney or tricycle and the loudest music on. I wonder if this penchant to blast away the ears of your neighbours and passengers is an Asian thing? Notwithstanding the large amounts of toot-toot I am hearing everywhere as well, but yes, that is not music, that is noise.
The fare costs about RM 40 (EUR 9 / US$ 12) for an hour’s ride around the historical city of Malacca, which I believe includes some commentary from the driver. You can always haggle though.

I was really keen on taking a ride but my parents thought it was a silly thing and it would be too selfish for me to go alone. If there was a trishaw offering 3 seats then perhaps I could have convinced them to jump on board. However, the trishaws are only equipped for a 2-persons ride.

And here they are going around town. There is an air of friendly showdown between them, who has the brightest trishaw and the loudest disco music on =)
They also wait for customers at the grounds and nearby surroundings of St. Paul’s Ruins. You do not have to pick one hastily, take your time and find one that speaks to you. Now here they are waiting for you =)
A very fun activity, as well as an attraction indeed!
