Dutch Windmills in Frozen Kinderdijk
It looks like 2014 winter is going to be record-breaking SNOW-FREE winter in the Netherlands. (Edit: It snowed a wee bit in the eastern part of the country during our wintersport holiday in Valloire, French Alps last month but then I refuse to count this event since majority of the population in the country elsewhere did not get to see a fleck of snow).
In my more than a decade of living in this country, we always have snow during winter, be it little and for just a few days, we always have snow. So far, not an inch of snow in the horizon. We probably should not give up easily because the month of February has just started and we still have March as well which always happens to shed some snow. We shall see!

Nevertheless, I would like to feel winterish tonight, so I am posting these pictures I took in Kinderdijk located in the South Holland province precisely 2 years ago (February 2012) that I never had the opportunity to publish in the blog.
The 19 Windmills in Kinderdijk are UNESCO world heritage. The windmills were built between 1740 and 1761 to help drain the low catch water basins and polders in the area. The Netherlands are actually a network of marshlands and ditches. Among other useful things such as power generation and milling, windmills were used before as a form of irrigation system.

And skating on ice is the Netherlands national sport. It is just too bad that every winter we do not have any guarantee of frozen rivers, lakes and canals anymore.
How to get here:
By car is 1.10 hours from Amsterdam via A2 - A27 - A15 highways. Kinderdijk is south east of Rotterdam. To come here by public transportation would be a challenge which I do not highly recommend if you are not from here but you can calculate your travel via this site: http://9292.nl/en.
There are many group tours going here as well that you can join.
