Finnish Home Cooking for €8 Set Meal at Hanna Maria in Porvoo
While looking for a place to eat lunch in Porvoo I stumbled upon this home-style restaurant-cafeteria. Finland is not a cheap country, nor any Nordic/Scandinavian country that is, but this surprisingly is the cheapest meal I had during my visit, which made me wonder if this restaurant-cafeteria is subsidised by the government one way or another.

The cafeteria-restaurant sits on a corner of one of the main shopping streets in Old Town Porvoo. It has an outdoor terrace for warmer days. The restaurant caught my attention because there were people coming in and out continuously compared to other restaurants in town which were a tad quiet.
Curious, I checked the menu. They serve Finnish home-style cooking and the prices were so darn cheap. They serve a standard set menu which is priced between 8 and 13 euros based on the main dish. A set menu consists of a main dish, carb side dish, salad (with herring if you wish), 1 bread + butter, home-made beer or water, coffee (for adults) or ice cream (for children).
The restaurant-cafeteria also has ready cooked meals on top of the ala carte choices, so not wanting to wait and gamble, I decided to choose from the cooked dishes and picked the beef stew. My damage? 8 EUROS for the whole set meal. That cheap. I could not believe it myself.
Hana Maria is a restaurant where you can order ala carte (+ set meal) as well as a cafeteria where you can choose ready cooked dishes to go with the set meal.
This was a very nice experience for me. Most people who ate here were locals I noticed. The interior design is also quite pleasant.
Good food, home cooking, very local, friendly atmosphere and value for money! 4 stars out of 5.

My 8 euros meal: Finnish style beef stew with carb sidings, salad with herring, bread and butter, home-made Finnish beer. Plus a cup of coffee after the meal which is also included in the set meal price.
Very filling and definitely home cooking style.
Salad greens and pickled herring. Herring is big in the Nordic countries as well as in the Netherlands by the way. The norther countries like them pickled, the Dutch prefer to eat them raw.
