In Ljubljana: Cake Shops and Borovnicke Liquor

Cake Shop Bar Cafe: Slaščičarna pri Vodnjaku
Facebook: Slaščičarna pri Vodnjaku  |  Address: Stari Trg 30, Ljubljana

I noticed in Ljubljana that there are just too many cake shops which are called locally, slascicarna, and are doubling up as café and bar restaurants or vice versa. The cake thing is interestingly a major thing in this city.

If only I have a big stomach for my large mental appetite I would have tried the scrumptious Slovenian cakes. This was actually in my plan, to try the famous ‘prekmurian layered cake’ (prekmurska gibanica) but sometimes it is difficult to force a mental craving to become an actual palate craving. It just does not happen like that.

Instead, I had a glass of fruity brandy called ‘borovničke’ which are pressed out of blueberries. The waitress offered this to me as a recommendation when I asked for a local liquor suggestion. It is sweet, fresh and has a rich thick texture.

As for the interior design and ambiance of the bar cafe, it is a bit eclectic and cool. Earthy tones with a bit of shabby chic elements meets classical antique yet trendy style.

Nevertheless, when in Ljubljana do check out these local bar cake cafe shops. I am sure you will love it.

Very cool interior design of wood, chandeliers and antiques.

Borovnicke liquor, just a little before dinner =). I also picked up a Ljubljana guide.

This is the prekmurska gibanica layered cake, a national speciality in Slovenia. If you are into pastry, this is a must try when in the country.

At the back of the cafe bar are cosy rooms. I really liked the interior design of this cafe. Very down-to-earth, arty and inviting.

The pastry shop bar cafe is located on the corner of this square intersection (Stari trg corner Gornji trg) in Ljubljana old centre.
