Pictures of Jews on the Singing Fountain Square of Kosice, Slovakia

When I was in Kosice, Slovakia last May I passed by the Singing Fountain in Hlavne Namestie which is located in the city centre between the St. Elizabeth Cathedral and the National State Theatre. There were blown up pictures hanging like laundry in the square. Upon closer look, I saw that they are pictures of Jews in Jerusalem.

You know I have been wanting to visit Jerusalem, or Israel in general for that matter. I am just waiting for all the crazy war in that region to die down a bit and then I will go there.

Before the Holocaust, Kosice was home to one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe. Almost all of them were deported to concentration camps in Central Europe. I have been to the biggest one in Auschwitz many years ago. What happened there was unthinkable. Nobody believed it at first, but it did happen.

It is a very sad story and I guess reliving a community this way perhaps helps some people and generations to heal, and remind us to remember what is precious to all of us. Freedom that is.


I was not the only one intrigued with the blown up pictures on the square.


The fountain makes music but when I was there it did not. Perhaps only during summer?

My friend Bubbles, whom I was travelling with in the Balkans, had a request that we stop over at Medjugorje. We got lucky because Medjugorje was on the way to Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is our next stop. Half an hour into our driving, we reached Medjugorje. Parking was not easy to find, but we struck lucky and found a space not too far away from the Saint James Church. Bangkok, Thailand: The Story Behind the Impressive Serpent Statue at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport

If you fly out from the new Bangkok ‘Suvarnabhumi’ International Airport, the huge, colourful and impressive mythical statue popular in Thai and Indian culture, the 3-headed serpent Naga (his name Vasuki) in a spectacular tug-of-war scene with its mid-section body wrapped around a stone, which is actually a mountain, and Vishnu one of the supreme deities in Hindu is sitting on top, will greet you as you finish immigration and step inside the airport’s duty free shopping area. You just have to stop and be dazzled by it. The whole installation is impressive and as I took pictures I wondered what the story is behind this scene. After much googling around, I found out that the statue is very famous in Hindu culture and religion. This legendary scene is called ‘Samudra Manthan’ in other words in English – the ‘Churning of the Ocean of Milk’.
