The Iconic Colourful Georgian Houses of Bristol, England

Perhaps for local Bristolians, the best quintessential symbol to represent their city is not the impressive Suspension Bridge but the iconic colourful terraced houses on the Bristol Floating Harbour and River Avon.

These pictures of colourful traditional Georgian and modern-adapted terraced houses were taken in Hotwells. A beautiful harmonious synthesis of old and new architecture that is really nicely orchestrated. Other places that you can find these multi-coloured terraced houses are in Clifton on the eastern side of the River Avon (this is behind Hotwells) and Totterdown on the western side of the river.

If its a good sunny day, there is no reason not to walk from the city centre to Hotwells and back, or if the day is a bit greyish and cold, one can always opt to take the regular ferry just as I did. The best way to get panoramic views and snap a good shot of Hotwells is from the boat or Spike Island. Hotwells is located in the eastern part of Bristol’s Floating Harbour.

Additionally, the ride from Bristol Airport to Bristol’s City Centre also offers from a distance a sneak peak of some of the lovely views of the bright coloured houses. If you are renting a car, you can always elect to pull over and admire them, but if you are on the £7 bus ride, just sit back, relax and enjoy the view while it lasts.


The ferry driver was all smiles to all the passengers on board.


Hotwells is one of the suburbs in Bristol where you can find the multi-coloured terraced houses.

My friend Bubbles, whom I was travelling with in the Balkans, had a request that we stop over at Medjugorje. We got lucky because Medjugorje was on the way to Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is our next stop. Half an hour into our driving, we reached Medjugorje. Bangkok, Thailand: The Story Behind the Impressive Serpent Statue at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport

If you fly out from the new Bangkok ‘Suvarnabhumi’ International Airport, the huge, colourful and impressive mythical statue popular in Thai and Indian culture, the 3-headed serpent Naga (his name Vasuki) in a spectacular tug-of-war scene with its mid-section body wrapped around a stone, which is actually a mountain, and Vishnu one of the supreme deities in Hindu is sitting on top, will greet you as you finish immigration and step inside the airport’s duty free shopping area. You just have to stop and be dazzled by it. The whole installation is impressive and as I took pictures I wondered what the story is behind this scene. After much googling around, I found out that the statue is very famous in Hindu culture and religion. This legendary scene is called ‘Samudra Manthan’ in other words in English – the ‘Churning of the Ocean of Milk’.
